Mennas does not have any Fire or Cold Resistance, so if you have some summons (imps or undead) use them to slow Mennas and keep him into Ice or Fire clouds, it should kill him in a few turns.

Firestorm/Icestorm should work too, as long as you have summons to keep him inside of the storm, problem is that the storm is very small in comparison to the large area/corridor zone you can cover with a Fire/Ice cloud.
Fire cloud is a bit tricky to learn, as you need Poison Cloud + Ignite Poison though.

So if you can, use the clouds+summons, that's the best Mennas killer.

And i agree, you need speed, a lot of speed, because Mennas is moving faster than a normal speed character using boots of running.

Last time I killed Mennas won on a MiFi of Oka. Drank Might, put on Heroism, Finesse, and went to town with him.

He's pretty easy for a non-caster... but yea, you need to do some tricks to kill him as a caster. The trick isn't so much blowing him up as fast as possible, but rather rendering him harmless (if only momentarily) and THEN blowing him up. Just going in guns-a-blazin' and hoping you'll kill him before Silence hits you isn't a good plan.

I would point out that, while summons are certainly better controlled than an enemy NPC, Mennas would cut through them almost as quickly as he would you. They are more reliable in terms of getting into a favorable position, but it is much more mana intensive.

Only time I've killed mennas with a caster was a MuSu (or maybe Wz -- it was summoning focused, anyway) of Sif in a sprint game. I did it by simply burying the bastid in haunt spam from as far away as possible. And by burying, I mean probably four or five dozen -- maybe more -- undead died before mennas did. He couldn't approach me because I just spat out another haunt every time he managed to kill one off, keeping the newly opened square, well, not open.

This was a while back, though, before Mennas was porter over to the main dungeon... it's possible he's changed or something and that's less viable than it was.

For reference, I'm a Tengu Vehumet caster playing sprint.

I ended up killing him by catching him in a group of other monsters. Turns out he'll die if you can cast 3-4 more firestorms in the same amount of time. Vehumet mana refilling is awesome.

Anyone feel that Ring of Fire + summon elemental spam is a very, very cheap way to kill something?

There is no cheap way to kill in Crawl... unless you're talking about mana/food efficiency. In which case it isn't too bad, but could probably be better.

I'm guessing you meant Ring of Flames, but fire elementals aren't particularly amazing. Besides, air and stone elementals can be generated pretty much anywhere to begin with.

You don't carry any source of teleportation?  That is really odd though.  The walls might go away if you wait long enough.

I was doing elf 5, so i packed a bunch of resist gear and dropped most of my scrolls because its -cTele anyways and I'm pretty good at wrecking everything in my path once I get in a hallway, and I also had extra speed from my boots and speed potions to run away.

Had a digging wand in my stash as well.   :-[

edit: waited a couple hundred turns and it tele'd me, YAY!
