That doesn't sound like it would work.  I'm pretty sure you still need 10 necromancy to even read the necronomicon, and failing to remember a spell from it causes a miscast effect too.

Also, most of those features were in 0.10, weren't they?

Regarding Trog gifts: They don't really seem to be that bad at all. You get them frequently enough, and since they're all weapons, you have a pretty good chance of one of them being something good/rare. This is very useful on a troll/ogre, since giant (spiked) clubs normally don't come with brands, but Trog (or Oka I guess) can gift artefact ones with whatever brand.

Although I think you can just use a vorpalize scroll on a GSC, albeit a scroll of vorpalize weapon and the needed spell is probably not something you're going to have for a while.

Still, artifact GSCs are pretty great. I havent had trog gift me one since .9 though. Unlucky I guess. Gotta keep at it.

Since 0.9 :

Trog specialises in antimagic weapon gifts, gives fewer artefacts.

I hate Trog. I dont know why, but he always seems to gift the most useless stuff I have ever seen. IIRC Trog and Okawaru are supposed to have the same quality gifts (obviously Trog only gives weapons too), but I always get better stuff from Oka. Uncle Oka loves me. Hence why I hate zerkers.
I seem to get mostly bad gifts from Oka and mostly good or mediocre gifts from Trog. The nice thing about Trog is a very high chance of getting a really great weapon, while without him you could be stuck for most of the game using complete crap.

Without spells, you just get vorpal, which is something, but not great. And you aren't going to have spells with Trog anyway.

Also, there are plenty of brands you can't vorpalize, plus randarts can have other interesting properties.

My favorite named artifact melee weapon for a melee character is the Wyrmbane; it is a reach weapon, grows to neat +18,+18 by slaying dragons and is an onehanded weapon to boot.

I too prefer Okawaru when playing a heavy fighter; mainly for the odd randart crystal plate mail and large shields.

Yeah, its a pain in the arse, but you full heal (or at least +150) pretty much every single turn, which more then makes up for it.

Eh, its like every 5 turns and makes the sprint last 50x longer with having to stop for a couple seconds every few turns.

This is probably a really dumb question, but how do you start Ziggurat Sprint? I checked in the Dungeon Sprint menu but I can only find Red Sonja, Fedhas' Mad Dash, Violet Keep of Menkaure, and Ten Rune Challenge. Unless one of those is it. Maybe I'm just dumb.

You can just hold down enter for the mutation messages.  There's also probably a way to mute them but you'd have to ask someone else about that.

I just lost with my HOGl. It would've been my 3rd streak. Now, my win rate is stuck in the 40s.  :(
