It looks like they've been pushed to 0.14 :
http://git.develz.org/?p=crawl.git;a=blob_plain;f=crawl-ref/docs/changelog.txt

edit : the changelog reminds me of something i really disliked in the recent trunk version i play : the summons do not follow you anymore through stairs, like the undead were already.
And worse : so far from my tests if you go in stairs and immediately go back up ... your summons have disappeared.

How long have lava orcs been in trunk for? 0.12? 0.11?

ok WTF, I died to an orc priest all by himself due to the fact that suddenly, I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn...right after taking him to a quarter of health whilse still having full health myself. FU Game!

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

You did not die because you couldn't hit the priest, you died because you didn't utilize escape options in time when it became clear you weren't hitting the priest.

Apparently and unfortunately for me as i like stats, the devs don't like them, and instead of having damage numbers rolling we have the "ouch that hurts" type of messages or spell power expressed in " **** " .
I remember in some old version i was playing, when enabling wizard mode you had the numbers, not sure if it's existing in current version, been so long i didn't used wizard mode.
Well they could add text messages for all I care, as long as I can get a feel for what's practical. Something like "This weapon is extremely/greatly/clearly/somewhat/a bit cumbersome to use with your shield/armour/shield and armour".

Okay, I am this close to getting levels 1-8ish down to a science. One thing I still don't understand is how to combat poison.  Specifically, the poisoned darts, whips and other horrible things Kobolds so often surprise me with. It doesn't seem like there's any way around it except for the RNG to have granted me a cure potion by level 2-3. Otherwise, I'll pretty much walk 10 steps afterward, taking 3ish damage per turn until "You die..."

Is there a trick to this? What am I missing for avoiding those early poison deaths?

Don't let things give you red poison.

Don't let things give you red poison.

Is that preventable? Like, is there a stage in between where I'm only getting the mild poison and know it's time to run? I may be missing it if so.

Yeah, there's yellow poison where you only take a point of damage every few turns.

avoid snakes when possible, pepper snakes with darts/javelins while they approach, use throwing nets, use consumables like potion of might/invis/speed etc, use wands, read scrolls to gtfo. The key is to realize that your health is lower than you think because of the poison.

For goblins with poison needles, hide behind a wall and force them into melee.

Snake Pit and Spider Nest are branches in which getting red poisoning is not rare at all (going there without poison resistance is a death wish, and since 0.10 that nerfed poison resistance getting red is still possible despite having resistance)
