Hell yes, a tournament should be a great way to introduce yourself to the game. You might want to play a little in the current version to learn the ropes, but tournaments celebrate new stable releases, so everyone will have new things to play with in it.

DCSS is pretty different from ToME, but probably has a lower learning curve so you should be fine. The primary difference is probably how DCSS is classless: your background defines starting skills and inventory, but you can go ahead and learn any skill afterwards. (A tip, however: get a weapon or attack spell skill to 10 before you put XP into anything else, even defensive skills. Specialists are more effective than generalists in the early game.)

For those like me who are more likely to jump to threads by ways other than the main board, FakerFangirl is maintaining this tournament's thread here.

I had all my staircases blocked by uniques and dragons at one point, so I was alternating between stealthing into depths to scum abyss with lugonu and stairdancing spider nest to gain piety. Stopped working so well once I ran out of piety to leave abyss and then an eyeball got me in spiders. Moral of the story: Never worship Jivya as a wizard. His slimes grant zero xp once you abandon him and the slime:5 loot gets eaten if you don't push out the slimes before hitting max-piety.

There was some early two threads one cup confusion, and not much activity, but we are there, waiting, ready.

jesus hecking christ, this last game.

decided to play as a Felid Berserker because i just wanted different kind of character than i usually play (though meleedudes). did not expect to even make it to Lair.

found early rings of +4 slaying and +4 AC which were amazing, but what really surprised me was just how strong FeBe as a combo was. Felid speed is absolutely insane, meaning you almost never get into a fight you dont want, and when you do get in a shitty situation nobody can ever seem to hit you! that plus high stealth allowing you to often kill a lot of enemies in one hit made for a very easy 2 runes.

the big issues was then what third rune to get. the Vault rune seemed like a bad idea, so i decided to go for the Slime rune, which i had only done once before with Jiyva as my god. i cleared most of Slime but then i saw TRJ and got scared and get the hell out of there

decided to go for the Abyssal rune after that. so i entered the Abyss and...

i accidentally entered Pan! a branch i had never even been in before...

killed the first Panlord by zerking him down, died twice to random stuff in the second Pan floor after which i decided to sneak around the actual Panlord and grab his Demonic rune (solving my third rune problem) and found an easy exit in the third Pan floor.

after that i did Vault5 anyway to avoid going into Zot without any spare lives. it was relatively easy, as was Zot (altho i did get some very useful commentator advice).

TL;DR: FeBe is actually a very strong combo, even i can win it!

couple tips:

don't clear slime. it isn't worth it. just dive down. trj can be rough for melee, though, so maybe it isn't the best choice for FeBe. but maybe i'm wrong.

pan as well - you don't really need to clear levels, often no reason to kill a panlord. you should generally just go from level to level until you find the ones that actually have a run in them.

that said, FeBe might have a tough time getting a rune in pan. abyss would have been a  much safer bet.

i intended to enter the Abyss! i only got the Demonic rune because i found it before i found a way out of Pan

So I've been away from "the scene" for a while, does anyone know when the next tournament is?

Despite the, uh, questionable trap rework that was introduced at the earlier trunk versions (what happened with this, anyway?) I'm feeling up for a bit of Crawlin'

I like a lot the new traps, actually. Why do you say "questionable" ?

Feedback is overwhelmingly negative in any DCSS-related community I frequent. Not going to lie, having visited Tomb several times, I don't expect I'll be seeing many positive opinions for quite a while.

As far as my own thoughts go, I disagree with enemies using teleportation/blink traps on the player, enemies using Mark traps on the player is an abomination unto this world, and exploring having a chance to activate a trap on you regardless of the terrain is objectively terrible.

The concept of the trap rework just doesn't make much sense to me.

If it was like a supervillain's base where, presumably, everybody knew where the traps were, how they worked, and they may be able to be aimed, then sure, all traps hit the player. But the rat that triggers a net trap... has it dump on my head, thirty feet away? It's like I'm constantly standing on a Looney Toons 'X'.

Also, yeah, the Tomb sucks. I lost an extended game character in there recently (only needed three more runes, plus I was already rolling Zigs for fun), though I did get overconfident and not switch to Kiku like I usually do.
