I'm mostly meh about it. The last tourney I played wasn't particularly enjoyable, and very few of the changes since have made me go "Waow it's Crawl time babay".
Crawl changelist:

Removed fun
removed problematic fun
Fun found, removed

I used to look forward to these tourneys but the increasingly insular development crew just seems to hate the people who play their game at this point.

I've harped enough about Crawl development over the years, sometimes justified, other times not as much, but to me personally it comes down to several things - I enjoy diversity, I don't mind redundancy (especially in enemies), and I'm not all that concerned with balance.

So when I read a change log that states:

Code: [Select]
Wands of Scattershot have been removed.
Several amulet, scarf, and cloak egos have been shuffled or adjusted
Jewelry with plusses now get constant plus values
Deflect Missiles has been removed. The tedious-but-optimal armour-wizardy-int dance has danced its last!
Next we have a round of item removals; that’s right, the dreaded r-word! On the chopping block are: lamp of fire, sack of spiders, fan of gales, crystal ball of energy, and staff of power.
The -Tele property no longer appears on artefact weapons and jewellery. Sorry, no more cheesing those Zot traps with your -Tele stick!

And I'm like,

Ok

but

what have you added?

Because playing since 0.5.2 I'm far more willing to not play Crawl at all, rather than go through the entirety of extended and the vast cornucopia of threats it displays, including (and absolutely limited to) Thing Wot Make HP Go Small (full screen) and Thing Wot Make HP Go Small (but localised, and now renamed to Damnation for some forsaken reason).

Anyways. I might possibly maybe try the tournament, but there's no way I'm going for a top 100 finish this time.

I'd rather have new species than nerfs. But every patch has made winning more challenging, which is a good design direction. I'll be taking this tournament more casually and seeing how long I last. They are marathons. I shouldn't play felid. I lake to play super slow and winstreak. Since it's what I'm good at. Defensive play. I definitely want to reach top 50 players. Last time 3000 people entered.

I'd like to see the main dungeon be a tad easier and extended get more difficult-- I like playing weird or gimmick builds that don't mature until at least mid-game and they're a pain to get off the ground. Couple that with a fast and loose preferred playing style, and I may have one of the highest death counts on CBRO. -_-

Playing some trunk to get back into swing of things just in case... without confusion my SpEn build is completely shafted, so will have to work on that one. Also, they massively nerfed conjure flame.

So i am playing a HOBe :-/. Looks like I can still get runes with one of those... just cleared V1, from a fighting perspective not much has changed.

But every patch has made winning more challenging, which is a good design direction.

It isn't necessarily, though. It can just as easily (and in this case seems to) be a matter of overtuning the design so that players who are currently good at it will find it more challenging but it becomes more opaque and/or less accessible and/or less interesting [Edit: i.e., there are fewer viable ways to play; you must play in a consciously optimized manner] to new players. When you see people talk about how "every death is avoidable" and how dying to "pure randomness" means you were overly hasty and moved ahead before you were ready - in a game featuring randomness which claims as its core design principles anti-grinding and not needing to be spoiled - you are at best sending mixed messages.

When you have a dedicated player base who's getting more and more familiar with your existing content and thus better at winning when facing it, you have two options if you wish to continue to challenge them: add new content ("bloat", if we're being perjoritive), or make existing content harder ("overtune"). DCSS is definitely in the overtune camp.

Do you have enough people for the tournament team? I've never played in a tournament before so how do I do this?

A team does not need more than one person (technicaly).
But more are welcome. (Up to 6 including the captain). The gathering for the tournament seems to have moved to Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup .24 Tournament, Get on a Bay 12 team now!

To join a team, you put "# TEAMCAPTAIN nameofcaptain" in your RC file for the current version (0.25 when it comes out), to captain a team you put
"
# TEAMNAME nameofteam
# TEAMMEMBERS player1 player2 player3 player4 player5
"
in it. The parts not in capitals are replaced with your data.

As for number of players, currently I have 4 listed for Blacksmiths.

Any idea what's up with this ring? First time I ever noticed this property. *facepalm* I didn't ID it.

It happened in the past , there are trunk builds but the page isn't updating.
The workaround at the time that is still working :

While the actual Windows build trunk downloads page is still not updating, (but nightly windows builds are happening) the RSS feeds do appear to be updating, if you want to download the current trunk version for windows (and not build it yourself), you can click on the link to the rss feed (the orange/grey button left of the actual link) and find/copy/paste the url for the version you want into your browser's address bar to download it.

I guess you could also subscribe to the RSS feed, if you have an RSS feed reader.

Ah wonderful, thank you! Felt like doing some light Crawling, to see what's what nowadays.

edit: Feels like playing VTM:Bloodlines with a new version of Wesp's Unofficial patch - everything seems pretty much the same but ... who's this npc; and where the heck is the Katana this time?

Also

Code: [Select]
You slash the orb of fire! You block the Orb Guardian's attack.
SHROANNG!

Wanted to Gong my way through the endgame, but Holy Pan threw a +14 Tower Shield at me, also Gong would probably have gotten me super killed considering how often I nearly died without having a full floor of Fiends sitting on my face at once.

Won my first game on the new Trunk which is a first for me I believe. Woo!

I was going to do Tomb tomorrow since it was 3:30 AM here, but then I remembered if I leave Tomb for tomorrow, then I have to do Tomb tomorrow so I changed my mind.

Doing Tomb:3 with a single scroll of blinking at 4 AM sure is a something. I was absolutely certain I would die on Tomb:2 but a random teleport threw me in the part that leads to Tomb 3. Then I was absolutely certain I would die on Tomb:3 but I managed to teleport to the unpopulated top of the map with something like 30 HP so it all worked out.

What a strange and beautiful world I beheld, but dangerous too, I was certain. And I was friendless and homeless. And so I prayed.
"Hear me, exalted spirits. Hear me be you gods or devils, ye who hold dominion here. I am a wizard without a home. I am a wanderer seeking refuge."
