Most of the major mods are listed here, along with tutorials and utilities.

MacNewbie beginner pack for Mac
Expanded LNP Contains Dwarf fortress, a bunch of prepackaged utilities and graphics sets that may enable new people to get into dwarf fortress easier.  Based on the outdated Lazy Newb Pack

Essential Utilities: These utilities take some of the repetition out of many of the common tasks, or can be used to repair things when they break

Dwarf Therapist-Splinterz Version <--- It makes Dwarf fortress playable.  It's that good. Get it! This has some more updates and features as the original DT author has been on hiatus.
DF Hack *updated link* Allows you to fix DF as it does odd things.  The cleanmap and Remove item ownership are must have's!


Dwarf Fortress Mods: These change Dwarf fortress and alter its balance sometimes adding new abilities and items into the game.


Profit's Item Annihilator My mod, allows you to create a workshops which destroys useless clothing, stone and someday corpses. 
black lung adds dangerous coal dust to coal veins.
A&P a mod that adds Aliens and Predators from their respective movie franchises.
Community Combat Overhaul
Fantasy Flavor This mod is a work in progress attempting to bring a little deeper fantasy setting to DF.
Caln Elcarië "Currently featuring 8 civilisations, 17 new plants, 20 new plant products, 9 new creatures, and 4 new materials"
Fanciful Creatures Adds some creatures some expect to see in the fantasy settings.
Fur, Hide and FeathersThis mod expands butchery and tanning to produce a variety of new products.
Dwarven Higher Learning Mod A mod that allows you alternate ways to train several skills.
Seasonal Crops A one crop per year mod.
Wanderer's Friend Makes several creature materials (scale, fur, etc) tannable and adds extensive Adventure mode crafting

Fortress Defense Mod The Fortress Defense Mod adds new enemies to the game in order to add greater challenge.

Warlord's Bonfire mod Heh Heh Fire Fire. Heh Heh Heh
Monster Hunter Universe Adds a number of things from the Monster Hunter Games
Hippo Pack The minimal version has several new workshops and a greenhouse that turns seeds into plants.
Mosquito of Power Wow...  Way better than malaria!
Dwarf Caramel Changes dwarven animals to more underground specific ones.
Bridge of Power Adds a couple new ores that are more powerful than steel.
NobleMod - adds a whole variety of nobles back into the game and makes the default ones work.
BattleCraft 4.5 Magic/Blacksmith/Train in Adventure mode, Embark as Goblin/Human in Fortress, ect.
Dwarven Lamination It adds a system to recycle wooden items into logs by breaking them down to scrap wood and making a new log from scrap wood using new glues.
Mechanixm's Vanilla DF Plus  Adds a few new workshops that offer some of the niceties of other mods, without all the changes.

Accelerated DF (+Modest Mod) - A mod that increases FPS by ~25%. Includes all Modest-Mod-Bugfixes, several utilities and a GUI for 3 tilesets.
Black Powder Firearms  Three new workshops, six new weapons and counting, to create firearms and ammunition.

Lucelle Weapons and Armour Adds a large number of weapons and armors from history.
More leather mod allows you to get more then 1 piece of leather from butchering animals
Upgradable Leather Tiers This mod adds an upgrade tree for leather pieces, and allows users to have a low/no metal embark.
Block Crafting Workshop allows users to make some simple furniture out of blocks, to fit more in line with the lower stone drops.
"Green Gel mod"? Creates a workshop chain to Change one type of plant into another at a 50% ratio.
Deeper Dwarven Domestication  optionally adds to or replaces the common domestic animals with subterranean and mountain themed creatures.  Includes lovingly crafted custom graphics.
Dwarven Voices gives dwarves a bit more flavor and independent expression in the game. Geared toward community games.
Fear the Night adds many kinds of custom vampires, werebeasts, disturbances, curses, necromancers, nightcreatures...
Broken Arrow
Teh LOLmod adds Necrothreaders, High Lord Threadomancers, Haxxors, laptops that shoot lulz, reindeer cavalry, chainsaws, drills among other things


Major Mods: These Change a host of aspects while still keeping core game play intact

GENESIS Reborn This is a major mod even as far as major mods go.  Please see the page for full description.
Civilization Forge 2+ Adds new races, armor, weapons, animals, plants, and rocks as well as many balance changes to make Dwarf Fortress more interesting and fun
Automaton Fortress Allows the player to play as the robotic Automatons.
Kobold Camp A hard mod that allows you to play as the Kobold Civilization.
Legendary Lands A mod that substantially increases the biodiversity of the world above, and the world below, as well as increasing the difficulty of the game in general.
Dwarf Fortress Advanced adds many tweaks and features, like religion, block industry, new castes, creatures,entities,megabeasts, noble positions,+ some  mods from others
Dwarvenrealms  Over 220 new creatures, terrifying megabeasts, goblins, orcs, and the ever-present threat of the terrifying Dragon Priests.
Dig Deeper GOLD 475+ items of new content including; new plants, new creatures, new metals, new woods, new gems, new stones, new crafts and more.
Legend of Forlorn Realms Adds a variety of creatures, items, races, and a tier-based system of "advancement" in the form of new buildings and reactions.  Lots of hidden features.
Dorf Space Dead space type stuff.
Regeneration: Forced Evolution Tech tree made up of three branches; Magic, Religion, and Tech. new creatures and civs.  each faction (race) has its own strengths. Humans might come with holy metal or wizards, where Gnomes might have Steam Powered Battle Mechs.
Direforged Mod several new entities, many with their own languages, more than fifty creatures of various nature, from hiveable vermin to megabeasts and night creatures, decorative and mythic workshops, and a gem-based adventure mode magic system.

Hunter's Moon Humans Vs Werewolves.
Fremen Sietch (Dune mod)
†++†SAECULAR†++† A total conversion mod, it currently offers 23 unique race/subrace/caste/gender combinations, Adventure Mode Spellcraft and Shifting Weapons for certain characters, (sub)race-specific and general weapons/armor, numerous additions/changes to fortress mode, and much more.
Colonisation: Year 3000 Seventeen sleeper ships from seventeen nations were launched and arrived at a newly terraformed planet in the Year 3000... They are not friends.
Dragon Age mod Converts the world to that of the dragon age world.  Not sure how total the conversion is yet.
=-~Corrosion~-= A zombie total conversion mod.   4 new castes, more workshops, changes to combat, no stone mining.
Nchardahrk An Elder scrolls world conversion.

Secure, Contain, Protect Found a site for the foundation! Avoid being killed by the Chaos Insurgency and don't let the Church of the Broken god steal your stuff!
The Legend of Zelda: Earthward Pick - A Zelda mod. Play as the Gorons, who can eat rocks! Play adventurer mode and get the Master Sword after beating 3 bosses

Modding Utilities: These are tools that help with modding your fortress.

DFLang Generates Language files
Raw tile selector & Raw tile merger Raw tile selector: Simple graphical interface to select tiles and colors for plants, stones and small creatures.   Raw tile merger: Easy to use tool to update tile and color data of unmodified raws by comparing them to modified raws.
Custom Workshop Workshop Allows you to quickly design custom workshops building patterns.
Creation Forge A standard cheat building that allows quick testing of new worlds.
vbase Extensive set of body parts and creature variations intended as a modder's resource
DF Raw Patcher  The utility goes through the DF raws and modifies the values that were changed in your Mod raws, and adds new entries where none previously existed.
Mozy online Backup Free up to 2GB. if you dont use this USE SOME BACKUP!!!
Dropbox A little more geared to file sharing, but still can be used as a backup device. Convenient if you use several machines.
Tile Genie Allows you to take multiple tile sets and combine them in to one set by picking and choosing the tiles.
Temperature Conversion Utility An html temperature converter.
UristV - Arena mode map editing.
Dwarf Fortress Mod manager Allows the creation and editing of mods and makes merging them together easy. Also helps to export mods into compact patch files, allows splitting and tweaking mods, & much more.
Random Raw Creator (RRC) This tool uses a list of nouns to create new raws for DF. It can create random Toys, Plants, Weapons, Stone, Food, Instruments, Minerals, and Gems.
DF World Tinker An advanced modding tool. It allows code gurus to add custom workshops and reactions to an established fort. Also, it can swap materials around and find raw data for Titans.
Random plant creation script Creates 70-80 new random plant species. It uses existing language and symbol files to generate random plant names and derive properties from the name.

PerfectWorldDF Utility to make your own world in any manner you want and how you want it to be. You want a world that looks like a smiley face or the united states? THIS IS THE UTILITY!
SoundSense A sound engine for DF which brings tons of new sound FX and music. It takes the game to a whole new level. Many who try it are no longer willing to play without. (version independent)
Quickfort Some people would classify this as an essential utility, it allows you to use .CSV spreadsheets to plan and build a fort... Very rapidly I might add.
ChromaFort A Utility to be used with quickfort. Turns bitmaps into .CSV Spreadsheets. (Version N/A)
Embark Anywhere Extract into dwarf fortress folder and run the .exe while selecting a site.
Just embark Just run this once and it will hack your DF so you can embark anywhere.
Nano Fortress This Utility allows you to embark on areas that are normally too small, like a 1 by 1 tile fortress
DFusion * Embark expander: have other races join * Simple_embark: modify your start dwarf count * Friendship: allows other races to do jobs * Tools: Race changer, Job select enabler, Embark anywhere, Adventurer swapper, Make creatures follow * Adv_tools: some tools for adventurers * Migrants: immigrants are random races
Dwarf Foreman Automatic job manager.  Allows you to do certain things like setting a level of stock you want something to be at and taking the repetitiveness out of general fortress management.

DGC Dwarven Guidance Counselor: As the name suggests, it gives job recommendations based on attributes & traits.
Pathing Simulator A maze navigation simulator which functions as a demo for path finding optimizations. (version independent)
WinMerge Open source software. Useful for installing mods as you can see what is changing.
M.O.U.S.E Fortress An AHK script allowing you to use mouse commands inside Dwarf Fortress. This has been updated to work with the current version of DF.
Raw Explorer Helps with modding raw files.
Dwarfquery parses the Legend File into a more human readable form
Utility Plugins This is a potentially game-changing set of utilities that work with DF hack. 
dfWorldTinker A command line utility to edit some data after world generation.



Obsolete: Mods and tools which are no longer used or are outdated.
density and color Changes the properties of stone perhaps a bit more to real life values. (Changes it made have been merged into DF vanilla)
Notepad++ syntax highlighting for DF raws This makes modding a little clearer
Wizard Tower Looks really unique. Has been superseded by DF chocolate. 4/14/2013
10-15-20-30 Embark size As the name implies, it allows you to change your embark party to 10, 15, 20, or 30 dwarves. * Does not work with current version as of 5/1/2013
Dwarves in a new World - Legend of Zelda - This mod drops the dwarves into the world of Hyrule (or thereabout).  Will no longer be updated 5/4/2013
Dwarf Therapist GUI For assigning jobs to your dwarves, this has been superseded by another and appears to be no longer maintained.

#3 The first post in the thread should be clear and explain what the mod does.

Although I don't use it myself, the mod base might be worth mentioning here.

It's a utility that makes it easier to add multiple simultaneous mods to your game, as long as they've been made compatible with it.

Although I don't use it myself, the mod base might be worth mentioning here.

It's a utility that makes it easier to add multiple simultaneous mods to your game, as long as they've been made compatible with it.

I have to be honest, I was surprised to see the LEGO mod on that list.

I have to be honest, I was surprised to see the LEGO mod on that list.

I am trying to get all the popular and good mods in one place.  Seemed to fit at least popular =)

Speaking of, to you have a very short description of your mod since I do not have one? (about 60 characters)

I also have two utilities that are quite useful for modding:

World Gen log parser v1.3: Perl utility script to help make sense of all of your civs, sites, and populations. Very handy for watching how your civ changes effect world gen.
Executable version of the log parser. Janus made this for people who don't want to much with Perl.
DF Word Generator v1 Perl script to build new language files. Obviously quite useful for anyone who wants custom languages for new civs. You will need to be able to run perl to use this, since you change the actual script for each civ.

Description:  A mod adding in materials, creatures, and civilizations themed around LEGOs and around stories based on LEGO creations.

I also suggest a new category; Zany mods
Mods that go under that would be mods such as the Ridiculously Overpowered Sorcerer Mod, the Sophisticated Gentledwarves mod, and the They Might be Giants mod.

And, I had looked at most of them but they were not included because their install methods were not well enumerated in the first post.

If they clean it up to where I believe a player with little skill could get the mod working I would add them.

I dare say the Modbase is not a modder's tool. It surely is a tool to aid modding, but on the "user" side more than on the "modder" side. It's rather unstable for some people, however.

Hehehe I already sent toady a message about sticking this, Hopefully you will not have to bump it to eternity.

I also sent him a dwarf fortress installer.  I hope it works decently as I really only have one computer I can test it on.   While I am sure everyone in the forum can make the program work from a zip file, I was thinking of the poor noobies.
