(Possible Spoiler?) Adamantine
« on: December 30, 2008, 10:38:03 pm »

Ok, I've been playing for a little while, but I really haven't had the opportunity to get very far.  I still haven't found adamantine in any of my 4 (!) forts.  I've pretty much mined everything out in 2 of them, gotten to 84 dwarves, and had production lined up for it whenever I found it... but...

So I started trying to track something down about a concrete location to find it.  Thanks to the wiki, there's a post there about how adamantine is found on EVERY local map tile with a mountain icon.  Is that true?  The comment was made in Nov. 2007, so I'm wondering if it was true then, is it still true for this current version?  If so, what might the reason be for my inability to find it?

Also, I heard that in 40d, the site finder option for "Other Features" has something to do with it.  Can't find that reference again, but I"m pretty sure it was on these forums.  That or the wiki again...  Anyway, is this true?  I've genned 4 large worlds with no river/magma pipe/other features in a 5x5 embark zone...

Am I overthinking this or something?

Also, if this is supposed to be a spoiler, what is a spoiler, and where do I put the tags?

Thanks.

"Other Features" means adamantine, yes.  If you're really desperate, use Gibbed's Dwarf Fortress Tweak to reveal the map.

You can always set the init option for showing HFS on embark.

And it's not the one for every local tile, it's one for every REGION (16x16 local) tile

Basically:

-You will have 1 (one) adamantine-containing pit in a mountain region. The region has to show the mountain sign on the map. If it is foothils where you have forest and mountain, but mostly forest, it will be a forest region and will NOT have ANY adamantine. Only mountain regions have it. If there are not enough mountain tiles in the region to call it a mountain region, there will be no chance of adamantine even on mountain tiles (I know I repeated the same thing here, but I am trying to be clear)...

- A region is 16X16 tiles. This means that if your fortress is 4X4 tiles, you will have a 1 in 16 (16/4 * 16/4) chance of having adamantine there. Note that adamantine is only on the mounain tiles.

- You can change the init.txt file to show adamantine pits before embarking.

use Gibbed's Dwarf Fortress Tweak to reveal the map.

If he does that, he's not going to receive his fabulous prizes when he digs into it

Or you can go to init.txt and set SHOW_EMBARK_OTHER to ALWAYS. Look for a £ when choosing your embark location.
