I *think*, but I'm not sure, it takes a year for them to become children, and then twelve years for them to become adults.

I'd suggest changing the raws if you want them to be useful any time soon.

The info is in the raw files.  :) [creature_standard.txt]
Look at the dwarf entry there:
[CHILD:12][BABY:1][MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE]

CHILD tag = Age at which a child becomes an adult.

I have a 22 year old fortress with just over half of the population (15 out of 28) being children. :)

They don't really hurt anything if you have a half-decent cook, I've noticed.

Sounds like a modest proposal to me.

I've had fortress with 70-odd adult dwarves and nearly 40 children before (Yes yes, I let them have -too- much free time  ;D ) Not too helpful, but they does helps with deconstruction, and I forget what else. It takes roughly 13 years, but as shown above, if you're impatient, you could mod the child time to something you think's more reasonable.

If you're into child labor you could use Dwarf Foreman to assign the children hauling tasks. Or any other job, but hauling seems more realistic.

Children are susceptible to strange moods so occasionally you get a legendary craft out of them. That's probably a downside, though, since they "use up" strange moods that might otherwise go to more useful professions.

Since you brought it up I just had to comment on how ridiculous the breeding is for dwarves. I set my pop. cap for 50 and didn't change the child cap at all and with nobles coming in I wound up with 161 dwarves, most of which were USELESS.

Vanilla 40d btw, anyone else find this insane?

Insane, probably, but it's fairly normal, consider it a consequence of out of control breeding  ;D
