Dwarves Keep Getting Stuck Underground.
« on: December 30, 2008, 10:58:51 am »

I seem to be having a problem that is really getting on my nerves.
My dwarves keep getting stuck underground when digging out more than one Z-Level.
For example. I started to dig underground to find some stone.I placed downward stairways then dug out upward ramps from the stairways. Then dug out a small hall to connect to the next set of downward stairways. My diggers seem to get stuck and will not return to the surface.Eventually they just starve and die off. Then I cannot continue the game because I have no miners.

not sure if this is anything like the problem I was having, Im also very new to the game so apologies if this is wrong in advance :) Also do a save.

Anyway one time when I was digging down with stairs, I got so far down and then I built a ramp and my dwarfs got stuck and died

Someone then told me , when you build a ramp, always build a ramp a Z level below that ramp, I cant remember my exact situation but I did that and the problem fixed , however Im not sure what the rules are regarding putting a ramp in a place thats previously been dug out so maybe try using the two ramps in a place nearby but not where the stairs are?

Ramps remove the floor above them. for digging many z below, it's easier to use up/down stairs. Also, you do know a down stair requires an up or up/down stair below to work?

EDIT: yes, use the wiki

Why the HELL are you using ramps for? Just build stairways!

Sounds like the problem is that, what you did is this
v
v
v
v

Looking at it from the side, where a v is a down stairway, whereas what you want to do is this

v
x
x
x
x
^

Where v is a downstair, an x is an up/down stair, and a ^ is an upstair.

...except he's using RAMPS not STAIRS.  :P
I don't think DF would let you stack ramps... will it?

nope. if you make a ramp, it removes the floor above, so there's nothing for a ramp to sit on above.

It's more realistic in the fact that ramps are for gradual changes in height. A ramp that went many z levels down in 1 square would no longer be a ramp, just an awkwardly slanted wall.
