DF awesome construction contest! best site ever inside!
« on: January 06, 2009, 12:23:12 pm »

Ok, I planned to start out a new fort with the new version that came out a few days ago. Therefore i started to look for a nice location and generated quite a few worlds to find one with a location with the finder that had everything I want for a long lived fort.

And the location I have found exceeds my wildest dreams. It is the most awesome site I have ever found, seen, or heard of. Therefor I said that I have to share this site with you and make the most of it.

I therefore suggest a contest of some sorts. We each take the exact same starting location, the same 7 starting dwarves and we decide on what we are to do with the place.

The location is quite big (6x5), and has a magma pipe, sand, chasm, river, flux stone and HFS. But that is not what is so fucking great about it. Not only are there 7 pages of different monsters living inside the chasm, but I started inside the dead volcano.

The location is on a corner of a mountain (almost 90 degrees), where the magma pipe is located 5 levels beneath us. and the chasm streches out for about 8 levels above the magma. This is where we start. So it looks like a normal circular open chasm, but the lower half of it is full of magma, and I will build the fort inside the upper half the chasm, just above the very said magma! which is located on the "ground level", so one would have to pass a bridge over the magma to reach the fort stretching out above! Basicly it enables all sort of fun stuff. Everything from no drainage magma falls, obsidian factories, enourmous glass towers, or a military fort centered around killing of almost a 100 different mosterns such as troglodytes, rat men, ant men, trolls, giant rats, Giant spiders etc. This is without any doubt the best location I have ever seen.

This is a Linux save, from the df linux version but there shouldn't be any problems with it. Observe that there are only 10 downloads, so please continue to upload it til we have a group willing for the contest. We also need to set some rules, guidelines or what not, altough participating, discussing, sharing ideas and bragging is more important that actually having a winner.

Please let's have some real fun with this.

I have not modified the raws I think. it is the latest linux version, but I have switched the graphics to mike mayday's.

Would that be the problem?

Wow!  Super good.  Perhaps I'll use it to make my obsidian mould.  :)

My idea is to make a mould that contains magma AND water, and then break the mould all in one single shot, hopefully cooling the magma but leaving the inner parts intact.  We'll see how it goes.

That sounds like a fix for a current Bug. Check out the following link, you should be able to make it work pretty quickly. http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Cat_cancels_Store_Item_in_Stockpile:_Too_injured

That's what DF needs, The gutbuster brigade.  Screw that elf and his cat. Thibbledorf Pwent is the real hero.

I'm trying to upload the entire folder. basically it's the latest linux release with much of the graphics folder and some random other switched from the mike mayday version to get prettier graphics. I do not have the seed, nor do I know how to get it afterwards. I warn you that this was generated on an Ubuntu rig, so unless you also have linux seeds varies on different systems. But yeah, this is the best location I've ever seen.

to list features more nicely,

chasm
magma pipe
HFS
Cave
river
sand
flux stone

and most importantly of all is the beatiful starting location inside the magma pipe. Only problem is that I have now played til summer and still havn't managed to get a decent entrance for the wagons. Also, no other civ's than dwarves on the civ screen. So I don't know if I will have any sieges, or other caravans etc.

Yes a wagon entrance will be quite hard to build but thats what dwarfs are about. I was thinking of a spiral ramp ascending from the sandy ground level but still take any traders half the year to get to you ::)

Farming had me worried till I found out you can grow plants in sand :-\

This is the complete folder, you might try downloading it and just use the .exe instead of the linux file. might work.

Alright, first of all the OP has both the cat mouth fix and the all-economic stone mods installed. I ended having to download the Linux version and copy the raws and save into a new download of DF.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.
