Protecting my dwarves against the Giant Bat menace
« on: January 09, 2009, 02:37:03 am »

I live in a mountain fortress with a chasm somewhere around the middle, which means that it is populated by Giant Bats. Every so often a lone hunter will get torn to shreds, or a peasant hauling vital ore will incur their wrath. Even my militia cannot stand before them. Is there any possible Fuck The World mechanism I could use to eliminate these foul creatures?

archery... or you could pump water into the chasm faster than it can drain out the bottom which would have to be very very very fast

set aside two dwarfs, give them some plate, and make them wrestle with each other until they're champions. then toss them some swords and watch them obliterate everything.

floor the chasm over if you can get close enough perharps?
Will champions still be effective when they're dabbling in the combat skill they're using? :s
Didn't know that

Smooth and then fortify the sides of the chasm. Then equip all your useless dwarves with crossbows and station behind the fortifications. Alternativly build a roof and collapse it on top of the chasm.

Paint a dwarf's face in clown paint and force him into a Fell mood?

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

The problem with giant bats is that they have the [BENIGN] tag so your dwarves think its harmless until it rips them to shreds. Station military dwarves near the giant bat and hope that it attacks one of them instead of your civilian.

Aha!

Drawbridge or ballista bolt also sound usable.

As for hauling 'ital ore, I ran into this problem earlier with some gobbos. Make tunnels from your fort to the mines and wall off the rest, if you can.

Yes, champions have insane stats, so they'll kick ass with whatever they're holding.  My usual training strategy is to just let them wrestle, but give them axes when it's time to fight.  Don't let them spar with the axes though -- their low skill will cause them to accidentally turn a sparring blow into a real blow, causing decapitations.

^ Yes, just use champions and give them decent armors + weapons. They will easily annihilate your bats in the vanilla game.  :)

Fill the chasm in; build a floor right the way across it every few levels.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

That would only work against batmen.

if you want your military to attack [benign] things, just tell them to harrass the local wildlife. Suddenly they'll go on rampages all over the place, slaughtering dangerous groundhogs, goats, and picking fights with herds of horses (in other words, use wisely... but in this case it helps)

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.
