Illustrated skill tabs
« on: January 14, 2009, 06:40:07 am »

From what I gather, the stats are split further next update. Tabs to reduce pointless scrolling would be useful, especially if the clutter is going to increase

Bonus points of automatically selecting the right tab based on the dwarf's military status

Looks good to me. Also, It would be cool if we could click on the TABs with the mousebutton.  :)

This is nowhere near the most urgent UI improvement we need.  What's more, this just wouldn't mesh at all with the current UI and make things look tacky.

I'd rather have a clunky but homogenous UI than a still clunky mish-mash.

But yes, if we are going to have graphical areas they should all be somewhat consistent. Not to mention as few revisions as possible so they take up less of toadys time. Perhaps when we have complete mouse support and better menus, then we might get a revision.

Although I am not looking forward to an extended list of skills.

Ultimately I'd like to see little picture icons that symbolize the skills (think Diablo2 or WoW), so mining for example is a pick, the rank could be indicated by a number in the corner and or having the picture become a bigger beefier pick with each level (aka Copper pick -> Bronze pick -> Iron pick etc etc ).  With pictures and small corner numbers its possible to show all the skills together without worrying about long text running out of the menu area.

Alright, this is just a pet peeve of mine, but when you post images on forums, you should generally use the direct link in image tags, like so:

Code: [Select]
[img]http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/7392/tabszn0.png[/img]

The result:

As you can see, it's full-size, easy-to-read, and doesn't require any clicking or going offsite.

On Imageshack, they really go out of their way to hide the direct link, though.

Wow! I thought this idea was kind of trashy and ugly until I could actually see the picture and tell what you meant!

I like the concept, with a key to scroll through tabs, as well as hotkeys to go to a specific tab and a way to set which tab is gone to by default.

Not as fond of that particular implementation, but it would look just peachy in pure ASCII for now >.>

Tip: thumbnail and image only differ by .th

Perhaps something more like job title sorting, though-
stoneworking
-mining
-masonry
-engraving
woodworking
-woodcutting
-carpentry

etc. etc.

Wasn't aware they allowed direct linking

Imageshack blows anyway, for some reason I have to load the image twice or it won't show on the viewer. Anyone got a better service?
