CPU usage?
« on: January 25, 2009, 02:10:03 am »

How processor intensive would you say Dorf Fort is?
I tried playing it on my laptop during class, but it drained by battery pretty quick (around half an hour).

Extremely, it'll use up an entire CPU if you have enough creatures on your map. Once it hits the ceiling on your CPU the FPS will start to lower, which just means that the simulation will start to slow which is normal and very expected.

Yeah, CPU usage is extremely high if you have a huge fortress for example. This is why I say, that DF should use more RAM and less CPU power, that would help a bit, and it's not multi threading at all.  :)

DF is very processor inefficient like that, which I think is one of DF's biggest flaws.

125% of one core of my dual core machine (3.0 ghz).

Yes, I do actually get about 120 to 125% usage of one core.  I've seen as 65% CPU usage (over both cores).

Any way to optimize it, or is it a lost cause?

The data/init/init.txt file contains a number of options you can tweak to improve your speed, but I'm too lazy to describe all of them at the moment.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

The first time I saw the population cap I thought "THIS FORTRESS WILL HAVE NO LIMITS!", so I set it to 10,000,000,000 or something.
I later regretted it.

Pretty much everything at Maximizing framerate. Also try downloading 40d9 here under 2009-01-09, it might help with your framerates, though it might not be save compatible.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

Even by turning down settings and getting 40d9 it lags...
with 70 dwarfs and 50 animals it goes at around 60 FPS, and I have a quadcore 2.2 ghz and 8 gigs ram(vista 64bit so comp only uses 4 gigs)

I wish it used more ram... and multiple processors...
I should be getting a new processor soon to match my HD radeon 4870 HD 512mb which I really needed to play Dwarf fortress...

pretty maxedout.

messing with the display options is certainly advised.
Though the standard settings are a pretty good start, improvements can be made according to your personal hardware.

Beware however, some settings can eat your CPU and will require external editing/resetting of ini-file to play DF again.
