No, but how many do you really expect will run this scrip? Simultaneously? Even a hundred would not be a noticable load.

Not to mention that the script pings considerably less than once per second.

Actually that's 8.4375 gigabytes a day, which translates to approximately 250GB a month. Do you know how expensive 250GB of data transfer a month is?

tl;dr if you want to do something like this, ping every 15 minutes at the most. If bay12games has a downtime of less than 15 minutes it isn't a big deal anyways.

edit: That assumes a perfectly flat distribution of people in timezones. In actuality, normal traffic will peak during certain times of day and this will mean that a constant stream of bandwidth going out to verify uptime will be more onerous during peak operating times. During afternoons, PST and EST bay12games might be running near capacity and even a small amount of bandwidth could push it over.

You're off by a factor of something.  There's 86400 seconds in a day, so 1k/sec is 86.4 megs a day, around 2.6GB/month.

Still, to me, running automated scripts that use any bandwidth is a matter of politeness--though to be fair I guess Toady did ask for more information on the downtimes.

Avast! is rather reliable.

Now about this program. Wouldn't it be easier to just set up a cheap server that pings this forum every minute? That wont cause any more lag than us reading. In fact, this post will probably eat more bandwidth than that.

But if a lot of people run it, it CAN DoS the forums. Notice the "A lot"

Avast is good about not returning false positives, yeah. I use it myself.

NOD32 is what I would most strongly recommend but it does return more false positives than avast.

Well, I didn't bother running the program or anything, but I can report that I just had a problem connecting for about 15 minutes.

There are many issues with this statement.
