Need help creating an ocean side location with magma
« on: February 06, 2009, 07:36:53 am »

Going to write a piratey-AAR. Need help with an Ocean-side location with good access to some wood and to magma. I figure I'll pour the magma through a hole in the middle of my 'oil rig' platform and then I'll drill down through the middle to the seabed ;)

Hi!

So, could you please be a bit more specific about the terrain/features? If I have enough information, I could try to find worlds that have a high probability for the features you want.

However, I need to know what you are looking for.

In addition, I have the cat bug fix applied, and if you wish to use a seed/world I have found, you will need to apply it yourself.

Finally, I don't use the special features uncovery, so I rely usually only on the things you can see directly on embark screen (so, no guarantees for underground river/HFS/hidden magma/chasm/cave).

I know, a lot of requests on my part, but in return, I will try my best to create a site fitting your needs.

Hi folks, sorry I was a bit vague - 2am post and all that.

I'm using Mayday's tileset and attached mods and mostly I just am looking for magma near an ocean. I'd like a good chunk of ocean space as I plan to only build on/over/in the ocean. My dwarfs will be pirates, right?  ;D

Other than that, a moderately challenging location would be fun, but perhaps not zombie whales or anything. Not so fused about HFS and hidden whatnots. But magma is required, I don't know of any other way of 'drilling' down through the water other than turning it into obsidian first.

That's one thing I haven't yet done. Any guides on magma/water interactions and the like? I've made obsidian factories just fine, but I've never done mass dumping of magma into water. I didn't find anything on the wiki, and my ability to get decent search results here sucks.

The major problem is just creating a column of magma that's more than a single tile wide. When magma is dropped into the ocean, it creates a tile of obsidian that instantly sinks (That is, caves in). As more tiles on the same spot are created, they sink one after another until they break the surface. At that point the magma starts pouring out to the side, creating a platform on top of the one-tile column of obsidian.

That sounds potentially quite useful. I'd have to create a real grid of 'drops' into the ocean then, to get a digable column to work through?

While I've never done it myself, i believe you could ge around this by using magma-save retracting bridges.

Would be very cool to have your "fortress" entirely on a series of nearly-floating obsidian islands, like lily pads from hell. In the ocean. Narrow stretches between islands could be like shipping and docking canals, and each island could be a different pirate-themed district. Like the tavern district, the inn district, the merchant (caravan) district, etc. All spanned by narrow bridges.

Or just use a magma safe floodgate to turn off the flow, wait for it to drain/evaporate, shift where it pours and make the next column. Once you have something of a platform, you can just build walls on your island to redirect the flow and channel from on top of the wall to open up new segments. If anyone finds a seed, I'll give it a whirl.

I would love a useful seed.

As i imagine it I would have to build a platform spreading out over all the areas I want to drop magma in to. And then channel-type areas above the platforms to move magma to a series of locations, and then lever-linked hatches to dump magma into a series of strategic places. Could be interesting.

Hi!

I am sorry, but I have to ask again - does Mayday's set include any compatibility breaking mods? I checked the Wiki entry, and it only points out graphics stuff and no real mod content. Or am I missing something obvious? Unless we are compatible, my seeds will not be of any use for you (we found this out concerning the cat bug fix, of all things!).

If you want to try finding such a site yourself, maximize the number of volcanoes, maximize the variances for volcanism and probably go for a medium variance set for the rest. Remember to nullify all minima on the last page (after the number of civs) - they just cause unnecessary rejects for you.

The Mike Mayday prepack has both the cat mouth fix and the manual stone selection hack from the minerals mod.

Anyone able to chuck up a seed or some tip to making the sort of site I want?
