Yeah, this is usually quite common for people who frequently use the internet. The good thing is that we're usually quite versed in dealing with it.

I have an external hard drive with everything on my com backed up so in the case of total computer loss of control (which happens once a year usually), I don't lose all the data I've ever created on a computer since I was 12.

Depending on the severity of the attack, I too, like Bromor, will commence total orbital bombardment and cleanse the land of all heresy.

I've gotten this strange malware on my computer that keeps trying to get me to download a fake malware cleaning tool.

It's made a weird little red icon with a white X in my taskbar's running processes that keeps saying, "Your computer is infected!  It is recommended to start spyware cleaner tool."

And now it's replaced my desktop background with an image saying "Warning!" in flashing red and yellow, then "Dangerous Spyware" in white.  It's actually hard to read the warning since one of the things the malware program did was make all the text under my icons have a solid background.  ::)

It says something about being careful that you valueble information doesn't fall into "the third hands"...  ???

I've had this malware also in the past. Just download some spyware/malware killer, that will remove it from your computer. Basically this won't damage your OS itself, it's just plain annoying.  >:(

I already did this.  We've moved on, keep up! :D

be sure to check your registry, there is usualy important components that can be found there that if destroyed can screw the virus defences up. Leaving its weaknesses visible.

Also mind you, making a mistake on a registry is like using unlocker to delete the WINDOWS folder. You just screwed everything up, and not even computer gurus can save your computer if you do something wrong. Not mind you not every registry item will kill everything, but enough of it is vital that mistakes do cost a bit.

Thus why I always check what the heck I'm doing ten times and always make sure I have backups. Because reformatting takes to damn long and I want to kill these things personally.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

FINALLY! I thought I was the only one who liked to remove viruses manually...

And as for that whole "screwing everything up." I always am very careful (ok so Im never careful at all) but still that just adds to the adventure!

A week later, I claimed victory over it. It might still be there, but at least I chopped off all it's limbs and senses.
Thats what I did with Vundo.

I was recently infected with Vundo. I couldn't browse the internet without being bombarded with annoying pop-up ads. I just ran Malwarebytes in Windows safe mode and it removed every single registry entry and file pertaining to it. My computers working just fine now.

While we are at it.....a couple of months ago I ran a registry cleaner, and it totally messed up my computer. Some programs refused to work after the cleanup process..so if you ever decide to use a reg cleaner, be very careful.  ::)

CCleaner is a good and free registry cleaner.
Avast is free, and very good.
Use firefox. Get the add-on called NoScript. Profit.
PC Decrapifier might help you speed up startup. It removes trialware (that usually comes preinstalled on new computers).

Adding onto that, Spybot S&D is great for spyware and adware.

Firefox addons, you should get flashblocker and adblock plus as added layers. WOT is a good addon too.
I'm too lazy to link you to them. So you'll have to Google them. Make sure to only download from the secure Mozila website.

Oh, and to keep from entering bad sites in the first place, get McAfee's SiteAdvisor. It pops up a little check mark, exclamation point, or a red X near any search results, telling you if its a safe site. Hovering over the icon tells you stuff like how many popups appear, if the site sends spam emails, and if there where any bad downloads off the site. Works with firefox and IE.

That should be a standalone program. Not part of the AV.
