[40d9] Frame Rate Poll
« on: February 11, 2009, 11:39:10 pm »

In regular Fortress Mode only and using temperature, weather, gravity and so on enabled, what is the framerate you normally have in a mature but not huge fortress?

If you've made changes to increase frame rate or have an especially slow experience, please explain.

Who voted for 180+ FPS? I would like to know the specs of his system.  :)

I voted 121-180, but generally hit my cap of 200 bar heavy mining jobs/lots of dwarfs all trying to get to the same spot (dumping).

Hm....I am wondering that when will your system go below 120 FPS. How many dwarves are "needed" for that?

to be honest, with the new version even a Q6600 (2.4Ghz) mildly overclocked to say 2.8 or 3.0Ghz can run a moderate (80 dwarf) fortress at nearly 100FPS (if not more). Though, you need to make sure DF has its own core assigned.

With my 3.4GHzX2 - Core2Duo E8600 + 4GB of RAM, I get upwards of 200FPS with 80 dwarves.
It's niiiice.

The only fort I've been playing lately (with 40d9) has really huge cliffs, so I get about 12-20 on average.  On a less vertically challenged fort, I guess I'd get up to fifty.

Yeah, I am getting similar results also with ~80 dwarves. However having 150+ dwarves...that is another story.  ;D

I voted 180+ fps - on a large fortress with flows.

Just made my core2duo E8500 3.16ghz overclocked to 4ghz, 8 gigs of 800mhz DDR2 RAM, ATI HD 4870 512mb GDDR5 RAM. It's shiny :D

Before my 1.5ghz core2duo, 2 gigs RAM laptop ran DF at around 30fps with the same settings, with integrated graphics card.

I marked 180+, BUT, my latest venture is:

1. a 2x2 fort (less space, less CPU cycles)
2. on flat desert (fewer Z-levels)
3. without water or magma (no flows)
4. with only two cats running around (all other animals in a cage)
5. and my mining layout is "slash and burn", with almost no walls (cheap pathfinding)

The amount of RAM doesn't really matters to be honest. Either way, it's a nice system. However if you have 150+ dwarves on a 6x6++ map, and all features are on, and 100+ domestic animals are running around...you won't have 180+ FPS with that system at all. I am pretty sure about that.  ;)

Actually, running at 200 fps cap still with 120+ dwarves - but then again I don't use ANY pets except for 2 cats, which as soon as they breed I slaughter the kittens.

I've learned from my catplosions.

The only slowdown I've encountered so far was when I activated my "cleanse-the-infidel-invaders-with-underground-river-and-magma-just-to-be-sure-dwarven-defense-system" - and it wasn't CPU killing like it was on my laptop.

I'll try undermining the elven town next and let you know how bad slowdown is with collapsing hippies 15 z-levels into dust.  :)

EDIT- 8 gigs RAM allows me to run 64 bit VISTAIDS without any problems -.- (Don't even get me started on how much faster my 64bit linux OS runs)

Vista only takes a GB of RAM, unless you activate absolutely EVERYTHING.
Even with 2-3GB of RAM, you won't notice any difference running Vista + DF vs XP + DF.
