Trekking across the map for flux for no good reason

(1/2) > >>

Brian:
I have a magma smelter making steel.  The iron and pig iron stockpiles are about 6 squares away.  The flux stockpile is about 9 squares away.  It is filled with at least 3 by 15 marble.  While making steel the furnace operator decides to ignore the local flux and walk 200+ squares to a chunk of marble that was just excavated seconds earlier.  This continues until I stop actively mining the marble.

My fort design is too open to really barricade off an area. Are there any other suggestions about this? It really slows down my steel production!

Hagadorn:
flood the world with magma.

Brian:
I'm working towards that but I gotta make my invincible tower first, and that's where I am now :)

Hagadorn:
Oh sorry, Must of got the profit chart mixed up...

Try building a wall around the smelter and locking him in?
They are meant to grab the closest flux and use that.

Ieb:
Dwarves tend to ignore "closer" flux stone if there's some right above them. In Z-levels. But the stairways are somewhere far, and leads them to a 200-step trek through the fort into the mining area.

So either stop mining like that, or build stairs from the workshop to the mining area to decrease the walk distance severely. That's what I'd do.

After drowning the world in magma.
