Well, that's weird.  Though, upon reflection, its not nearly as weird as 'god-fearing' meaning exactly the opposite of what you'd expect.

Just listen to some old lutheran songs, and even atheists will start to fear God.

From Mine Eyes have Seen the Coming of the Lord:

He is trampling out the Vintage where the Grapes of Wrath are stored,
He has loosed the fateful lightning of his Terrible, Swift Sword

Scary, huh? I like the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

He is sorting out souls before his judgement seat?

Does that work?

Sons of God, hear His Holy word,
Gather 'round the table of the Lord,
Eat his body, drink his blood,
And we will sing a song of love,
allelu allelu allelu allelujah

My dad went to Catholic School.

EDIT: Didn't quite get the lyrics right.

To tell the truth, most of the bizarre biblical things disgust me. I've yet to see any that are scary in the least. There are a few really dramatic sounding phrases, though.

I'd put foward some of the passages saying that evil people are going to hell, but I'm not sure that you're evil Inaluct . . .

The Battle hymn of the Republic was written by a Unitarian.  And it's a song about abolition, not people going to hell.  Unless someone on this forum is secretly running a slave plantation, it shouldn't inspire much fear.

The very expression God-Fearing seems somewhat iffy to me.
If he's so great and nice and all, why are you supposed to be absolutely terrified of him.
Just to clarify, I'm an Atheist who doesn't care.

I couldn't resist the paradoxical thread title.

Once I thought about it a bit, it does sound perfectly alright to me. It would be an irrational fear for them. You don't believe it can't do anything to you, but you still worry.

I don't believe someone is watching me this very second, yet the thought crosses my mind that someone still might be.

God-fearing iffy Maggarg? I fear anyone with authority over me.
