Immigrants and the init file
« on: March 12, 2009, 05:47:32 pm »

I hope this is the right forum for it... as it does involve playing in the init file.

So, because as a total noob the first waves of immigrants totally overwhelm me, I pushed the population cap way down.
Now that my fortress is actually prepared for immigrants, I turned the cap up again (to 45 from 25). A year goes past, nothing happens.

Is that just unfortunate coincidence, or have I unwittingly fubared that game?

I dont know... I am betting on fubar, but honestly 25 dwarves is enough for quite a bit of stuff.

Do give it atleast another year and increase the value of your fortress by smoothing and engraving area's that look like they need it.

Hmm, I guess the masons could do with a bit of superior images of circles in their workshops.

And actually 29; apparently, the population cap doesn't influence how many little dwarfes can be made, and two couples produced six of those in three years. I could of course try to build a mighty mighty fortress the all-natural way...

You need to exit DF and restart the game.  Then the dwarven liason needs to show up and then he'll go back and send immigrants.

Yeah you haven't fubared anything; I play with my population cap all the time. You just had a bad year I guess.

And all is well in Chainheavens; two waves got me from 29 to 49 dwarves.

If it's indeed a visit of the liaison that triggers a new wave, it was less a bad year and more the fact that I set the cap higher right at the start of winter; hence a relatively long wait.
At least in the time for them to arrive, I got my fortress equipped with some more rooms for the newcomers \o/
