DF-inspired game I made.
« on: March 15, 2009, 03:50:42 pm »

As an entry into this year's 7 day rogue-like challenge, I created a game called Excitable Digger inspired largely by how much fun mining in DF is.

You can get more info and the dl link here: http://squidpony.com/ExcitableDigger1.1.zip

Update: Bugfix added, get new version from same link, top post.

Update: Added new download link since old one died.

It's good to kill off a quick five minutes.

Very nice game, but there should be a suicide button.

I like it, but I'm a bit confused as to what the "collapse" conditions are. Is it random?

Interesting. Is there a way to dig down?

Digging up and down are < and >.  I was randomly killed by a cave-in, which kinda sucked. :)

It seems like cave ins are caused by digging out long tunnels without any turns, which seems odd. Mining out huge spaces does seem to cause them, too, though.

That says awesome things about this game... Guess I'd better try it out.

It's fun, but you should remember the maps of levels you've been on instead of replacing them with the map of the most recent level you've been on. It's very confusing.

I'm not sure what you mean by that.  How would you 'remember' levels you're not on?  Do you mean you want to be able to move the view to levels different than the one you're on?  Because that's an obvious and great idea I hadn't thought of  :-[  I'll add that to ED2 for sure.

As far as collapse conditions go, it should be if you mine out to big of an area, if a single width long line is collapsing on you, it's a bug.

I agree.  Along with that there should be a persistent high score list, so your score actually has meaning.

Thanks for trying it out, everyone :D

What are the score ranges, anyway? I always seem to get the "Your family can barely manage on the amount you dug out" message, whether I got 100 or 3000 worth.

Also, I haven't seen any metal veins. Are those in this game? Or are they going to go into the next version?

I really like the concept. :) I had a good few minutes of fun with this even though it was so simple.
There's lots of stuff you can do to expand on this, I'm a bit reminded of this game called "Motherlode", which itself was inspired by other mine-type arcade games.  Working with z-levels adds an extra dimension, of course.

Perhaps you should be able to carry your stuff back up to sell for better gear and more food (to replace the illness 'timer'), and include items and skills that allow you to make the way back and forth easier and faster.  Stuff like supports, ladders, torches...
I'm thinking that perhaps the miner could be crafting unknowingly crafting a dungeon, digging out corridors and rooms to get to precious gems, which then get occupied by monsters.  Also, water, magma and gas.

Hmm...finally got up to 15000 before I died in a cave-in. Still counted as a 'paltry sum' though. :(
