PUPPYSPLOSION
« on: March 20, 2009, 12:46:30 pm »

OMG. I embarked with 10 dogs, anticipating using them as cannon fodder to lure orcs...

I'm starting to cull all the females, leaving two named female wardogs to be the producers, but jeeez its like they're spilling out puppies faster than I can butcher them.

I never minded in a 6 cows 1 bull fort, but ... now I'm all for reproduction control as a future feature.

(Thank god you can butcher the things)

I suggest putting them in a chamber, and when the orcs attack, unleash the whole lot of your dogs from above on the orcs. They won't know what hit them, and ypu might have some population control to boot.

This is happening in my fort too. Luckily the war dogs tend to run straight into goblin sieges, and I can use some of the puppies as trade goods if I have to since I feel bad butchering them.

Oddly, the fort's few cats aren't breeding at all.

Dogs breed a bit more often than once a year, have large litters, and with 10 dogs to start that's 5 females. So once a year you'll get spammed with all five female dogs having litters, increasing your dog population by 10-15.

I had this happen in my first fort, needless to say I had a titan come my doggy defenses didn't really work and my champion wrestlers and crossbowman started to die. I wish I had Curtis McCheesemaker there to strangle the titan like he did the dragon.

Step 1: Build giant pit above your fort entrance.
Step 2: Make the pit floor a retractable bridge.
Step 3: Dump all your dogs into said pit.
Step 4: When invaders come pull the lever to the bridge.
Step 5 (Optional): Set the HOMEOTHERM of dogs to insanely high amounts.

what I had hoped would happen was .. sec while I try to draw a picture...

Code: [Select]
.#...#
[]...#
.#.p.##=##
.#.p.....p...
.#............
.#########

[] open drawbridge
= closed drawbridge
# wall
. floor
p chained puppy

I thought the lure of slaughtering the chained puppies would draw the orcs in between the two bridges, but if there's no path to dwarfs, they seem to hang out on the edge of the map.  :( any suggestions?

Even better: Build a large bridge that raises in the direction of where your sieges usually come from. Dump the animals on the bridge, make sure they cant get away, pull the lever and watch as the enemy is covered in raging kittens puppies.

Dog trap! Have a series of pressure plates linked to a shared cage FULL of war dogs. Some luckless goblin comes running in, presses the plate, and then SUDDENLY WAR  DOGS, THOUSANDS OF THEM!

I do this in my civ forge modded game, but I use stone guardians instead. They need to up their wrestling skill somehow, after all.

Guys, just jam the excess puppies into a cage, and if you need to, release them to breed for half a month ( DF Time ) , then jam them back into the cage for them to give birth.

When they give birth in a cage, you get no lag, until you take them out.

The only times you need to take them out of said cage(s) is to either breed them, butcher them, or release them to zerg rush those pesky gobs/enemies.

---EDIT:: Anyways, selling an n-pack of dogs, isn't a bad idea, just make sure to keep at least one half of the dogs, and all of the puppies, the remainder are your meal tickets, dog farming is like making a saving account with an ever increasing interest.

puppysplosion is infinitely more controllable than catsplosion.
puppies and dogs NEVER choose their owner. only dwarves will OCCASIONALLY choose a dog.
so caging all your excess dogs is easy mode.
cats on the other can, gotta be quick on the draw when you see
"a uristscatiscool cat, has given birth to kittens!"
and even then a kitten may claim one of the people carriing it a owner. then you will NEVER get rid of it D:

The cats are so sinister that they can enslave claim dwarves while you're laying out digging designations... while the game is effectively paused.

Such is the will of our masters.
