The War Engine (+ VN War Mod)
« on: March 20, 2009, 09:46:17 pm »

Like, 9 years ago, I bought this program called The War Engine.  It's a semi-do-it-yourself, plug-in oriented Turn Based Tactical game maker.  Draw your own graphics, define weapons, units, terrain, and other concerns, and make little shooter maps with campaign structures and such.  Surprisingly limited in some areas, but overall a lot of fun to play around with, as I've been doing occasionally since I bought it.

It's biggest fault was lack of transportability.  You had to have a copy of the program to play other people's games, and I was one of the apparently 20 or so sales.  So it was a fun toybox, but I could never share anything.

Well, the program is long discontinued (the company that made it doesn't even list it on the website anymore).  Luckily, no piracy needed to obtain!  It's a freeware release now (make sure to grab the patch).

Lots of fun things you can try with it.  Maybe I'll make a gamepack emulating the Great VN Succession War.

If you can figure out what actually happened in the war, there needs to be a game that chronicles the entire history of the Various Nonsense's independence, from its secession to now.

Okay, so we seceded. Then we tried to take over Other Games and we were successful for a bit, but Toady pushed us back effortlessly. Then the boards split and we got the VARIOUS NONSENSE MOBILE BATTLE FORTRESS and wandered around the other boards spreading chaos and destruction. We were satisfied with that for a while, but then Aqizzar got elected Baron and the Party got angry and there was lots of chaos. Akroma did something, Sniper Joe revolted or something, Inaluct brings penguins into the situation, and all sorts of stuff.

That sounds about right.

Well if the war can be made into a fun wargame I would guess the fighting could actually be fun, without devolving into weird SRS BZNS stuff that sometimes happens.

Well as long as the sides are balanced.
