I never understood all those jokes, as well as those silly psych tests like:

I hate IQ tests. Particularly frustrating was this one where I thought that the difference between 4 words are that one of them had only 4 vowels, while the others had 3. Turns out I was wrong: One word had 3 syllables, the other had 2. My IQ went down by 5 points for having a more advanced mind that the person who made the test.

Also, IQ tests tend to assume that you're a genius because you know how to calculate in the obsolete imperial system in your head or know the Pythagoras theorem.

And some colleges tend to assume that knowing Latin suddenly means you're brilliant. If any language makes you smart, it's probably Chinese, because of the complicated system of it all, very different dialects, and it's been around longer than fricking Latin.

Those tests (it's called a Stroop Test) have nothing to do with "passing" or "failing" or showing how smart you are

They've been used to show that semantic processing kicks in involuntarily, among other things. Steven Pinker gave a great talk where he did one of those, and then did it with all kinds of cuss words asking people to name the color the cuss was written in, the point being that people cannot help reading and processing the meaning of a word they see...it's relevant in cognitive psychology.

Also, "intelligence" testing...took a whole course on it last semester, the conclusion? Iffy at best. Nobody knows what the hell intelligence is. The best tests can really do is predict your academic or job success.

Most Asian languages are pretty difficult. For example, in Vietnamese, you can make one sound and mean X, raise the sound a little higher in pitch and you mean Y, raise it lower and you get Z.
