Nightly builds
« on: April 26, 2008, 01:40:00 pm »

Hi,
it could be great if we have access to night builds of DF

I am watching development blog every day,
and when I read about all new world gen, I can't wait to try it.
So, why not to show us some aplha versions? We could try it, play with it, even find some bugs before official release of, say, Army Arc

thanks for answer

If we did that, it'd spoil the mounting excitement of waiting for THE BEST RELEASE EVAR.

Nightly builds are only really feasible if the game is in a stable state at the end of each day. I could easily see Toady having to rip out some fairly complex chunk of code and completely re-write it to add new functionality, and such a process could definitely take more than one day.

I would much rather see the artist spend his time perfecting his work, rather than compiling, packaging, and distributing "night builds". Even if it only took 10 minutes to do, that is about a half hour to an hour a week, or 4 to 8 hours per month. I don't know about you, but I can get a LOT of coding debugged in 4 to 8 hours.

Yeah, as said, nightly builds only work when the game isn't being town apart and reforged on a daily basis.

Also, the thing about us getting it in a sort of "alpha stage"... we're ALREADY getting it in a completely alpha stage.

Usually nightly builds are automated, so the developer isn't actually doing them.  Then if it doesn't compile, it doesn't compile and you don't get a nightly build.  And if it crashes, well it is a nightly.

But I don't care if we get nightly builds or not.  :)

DF, for all it's wonderful complexity, is still in an early alpha stage.  It's amazingly stable despite that, but I doubt nightly builds are even remotely feasible right now.

Worse, they would probably increase Toady's workload, without actually making the game any better right now (just setting up the nightly build system would take some time).

Nightly builds would eat up more bandwidth, additionally.

Engaging in thread necromancy because I was going to post a suggestion for nightly builds, too.  Maybe they could be automatic, so once things are set up Toady wouldn't have to waste time with it?  And if the game won't build cleanly at that particular point in time, we could just deal w/ not having a build that day :)

If you're gonna necro a 2 year old thread, at least read it.   DF's development style doesn't really mesh with nightly builds.

Well, maybe not usually, but this current string of small incremental releases sounds like it would lend itself well to nightlies.
