Anyone know of a way to keep your settings between versions?
« on: March 29, 2009, 11:22:47 pm »

Like the title says, it's a real pain to have to go through the init file every time I download a new version and redo all my changes.  Obviously I can copy and paste, but there are often times when Toady adds entirely new entries to the file, in which case I'd have to take special care not to overwrite those.  So anyone know a better way?

Sean Mirssen is working on a tool for that (well, not for saving settings, but at least: a pop up window before df starts, not only querying for fullscreen mode, but also with options to change init settings, and modbase options, without having to plow through various .txt files)

Dunno how far he is.. See the DF frontend thread:

It might be done faster if u poke him a bit ;)

open up a 2nd word file. copy and paste only what you need to keep, such as the window dimensions, and then go into the current file. Now, paste over from the 2nd notepad file.

You could try some variant of diff utility.

I run WinMerge over the init files on each upgrade.

I posted this suggestion a while back, but it didn't seem to generate much interest.  I'd still like to see it though.
