College Choices...
« on: April 01, 2009, 01:47:47 am »

UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz, tell me what you know or have heard of both.

Lazy now, writing paper I should've done hours ago after I read the subject of the paper (after I eat) so I'm not really going more into detail than that until later. Ask any questions you have. X_X

UC Santa Cruz's mascot is a banana slug.

John Travolta wore the T-Shirt in Pulp Fiction.

I have that T-Shirt.

I bought it as a hopeless, hopeless tourist.

Shoot for Harvard or Yale. Then you'll have a chance at becoming president.

Seriously though, have you visited the campuses personally? I also recommend visiting the campus during school hours if you can. Also figure in whichever has better programs for your intended major and minor. One should have a better track record in certain subjects than others.

Visiting both soon, no idea what I plan to major/minor in or what my career is to be.

Go for USMA! They'll pay you to attend!

Really though, don't. You take a spot away from me.

I'ma tryin ta get into da UC Davis for mah book learnin'. I don't know if I got in yet because as an unworthy transfer student they tell me after you freshmen types.

As far as I know, and by "know" I mean heard from people of various reputations, good and poor, Santa Barbara is kind of a party school that's been trying to shake that image with limited success. I think it gets a lot of business/communications/poli sci types. Santa Cruz is a bit more academic, I don't think they have a single athletic program and it's in the woods. It has a bit of the hippy reputation but I think it's supposed to be strong in liberal arts as well as some sciences, I think mostly life sciences. My uncle went there for his degree in Asian Studies I think. It was either that or pre med.

If it were me, I'd probably go to Santa Cruz but then again I like the hippy girls. On the other hand I think SB has a better econ department which is my chosen major.

Whichever you decide, you'll have a blast and get plenty of tail. And if you're lucky when you get out the job market'll support whatever it is you want to do.

UC Santa Barbara has the Center for Evolutionary Psychology, so I might be interested in doing grad work there. Also the weather is supposed to be perfect year round.

I don't know either of those universities, but do yourself a favor by going to a middle-of-the-road university and save your parents and/or yourself some money. If you are smart, you are going to be smart no matter where you go.

Apply to every famous ivy-league school just so you can joke about how you've got Harvard as a safety school and be serious about it.

But that's just on the off-chance they actually let you in, although it never hurts to apply anyways.

Except in the money spot. I know it's not a lot, but apply to enough schools and those $50+ start to add up to real money. For some that is a real concern.

...

You have to pay $50+ just to send in an application?  I've been outside the states for too long...

Or maybe not long enough.

I know a lot of skilled and not very skilled people who applied to MIT and Harvard and was accepted.  My parents didn't even have good grades when they got into Harvard. Wasted a few months of my life trying to apply, though. Acceptance rate is close to around 10% if you live in the USA, 3% for foreigners, think it's worth a $50-$100 bet? ;)

If you are smart, you are going to be smart no matter where you go.
In my experience, that is definitely not true. I know a brilliant friend in a bad school who's life went nowhere. I have experience from a top Malaysian college, but the knowledge wasn't good enough for me to survive in a top Australian uni. I know a few idiots from very good schools who are geniuses because the schools forced them to work hard to survive.

It's like how fat, slow and sluggish people can become athletes with the right training. Or how naturally strong people don't reach their potential.

I had a tough time choosing between two colleges several times in my life. TBH, in the end, doesn't matter in the least. Generally, no difference in the #320 best school and the #128 best.

So, don't worry. It's like picking a girlfriend - just go with the one that attracts you the most rather than credentials; you'll be better off that way.

Pretty sure application fees are way more than $50...

My advice is simple: It doesn't matter what you choose as long as your school isn't renowned for being crap. People only see the following when they look at your resume:

Quote
Is it an ivy league school?
No.
Is it a place of higher education?
Yes.
University or college.

This goes on to how long you were in school for and for what.

Especially if you work someplace that isn't familiar with the standard of education of where you're from, people usually don't care that much about your school name unless it's really famous.

It's pretty depressing, but that's them works. Just go and have fun. Your grades matter, but they don't matter so much that you must sacrifice huge amounts of yourself to the goal. I personally think the most important aspect of a college education is what you take from it not what you're taking it for.
