they were using pumps to cause flooding, both with water and magma.  look up screw pumps on the wiki.

Boatmurdered was on the old 2D version. There were no screw pumps back then. Maps were a lot simpler and had only a couple of predetermined sources of water/magma: a cave river inside, a magma river deeper inside, and in most climates an outside river in front of the mountain. A floodgate connected to one of the rivers would, when opened, cause an unlimited supply of water or magma to spill out. If you had any channels built out, the liquid would follow the channels only. A floodgate without a channel to empty into would simply flood out onto regular floors (typically fun would ensue).

Another thing that was taken out temporarily after the jump to 3D.  They'll be back though.

Another kind of flooding: seasonal flooding of rivers.  Also ancient ruins that you could explore in Adventure Mode, I think.  Also sensible cave-ins (if you dug out too big an area it collapsed).  Probably other stuff too.

Farming used to require annual flooding, and HFS was handled differently.

Another kind of flooding: seasonal flooding of rivers.
So not even underground rivers do that anymore?

Mine doesn't seem to, and I wish it would, it is taking ages to fill my channel...

Nope they don't do that anymore.

However Toady did mention that he would like to make the underground stuff interesting again.  That apperently implies new underground features, but I wouldn't be suprised if some of the 2D details of existing features make a comback.

I personally just finished reading Boat Murdered, and I was wondering if anyone has a map for 40D that is similar?

Yeah, you can get a combination of features including a river, a magma pipe (magma that refreshes itself), and, if you're really lucky, all the extra stuff too. It's really, really hard though.

Terraform a site so it looks like the old 2d ones. And if no dwarf dies during the terraforming you are doing somthing wrong.
