One-in-a-million moments you've witnessed?
« on: April 04, 2009, 07:37:32 pm »

So. I just saw a champion hammerdwarf send a goblin flying. Into another goblin. Stunning it. With the corpse of it's friend.
When I find who did that, his quarters will be engraved.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I remember how enthralled I was the first time I watched a melancholy dwarf do his thing.
He was throwing himself down exactly one z level, over and over, this was my second dwarf, so I had no idea what the problem was, I thought his pathing was broken or something.
So I dug out what he was jumping off of, and he proceeded to run around.
And then he jumped into a pit full of 2-3/7 water, I nearly died laughing, thinking up some cruel metaphor, like trying to suicide off a bridge into a tiny stream.

I watched two hammerdwarves pound the same goblin from two different sides at the EXACT same time.

he didn't fly, he just exploded all over my new walls.

I once had a dwarf run infront of a ballista in a tower the exact second it fired, he got skewered kebab style.  ;D

A champion toss a goblin so high in the air that he killed three others before the first came back down.

I like to reminisce about the time my fail modding skills made the leather people traded to me spontaneously boil... there was blood that day...

My self-named dwarf ran to single handedly take on a group of bow-goblins, fully loaded and ready to kill...

He didn't make it.

My captain of the guard fell to a goblin ambush, and his lover, the mayor, ran out to the ambush, probably crying and screaming and pulling out her hair.

A dwarf get sent flying over a chasm by a bronze collosus, only to land on the other side without a scratch on him, right in the middle of a goblin ambushing party. He proceeded to bat 4 of them over the chasm towards the bronze collosus, who was knocked over by one. The dwarf then runs around the chasm, up behind the collusus, and breaks it's head open. I imagined it to have happened like Athena coming fully formed out of Chronus's forehead when the statue emerged from the collosus.

In my experience, one-in-a-million chances happen nine times out of ten.

Well, this might be more like a one-in-a-thousand moment. A goblin siege got broken up by a squad of champions about 15 paces from my fort's main gate. Five z-levels up, directly over that gate was a room with fortifications for marksdwarves to shoot from. They didn't.

Now, while the champs easily dispatched the siege, I was a little irritated that my lazy marksdwarves decided not to shoot. I look at the room and, sure enough, all the marksdwarves are absent, presumably drinking or sleeping. What I did find was a single goblin leg that had apparently been severed with so much force that it flew 5 z-levels up and 15 away and jammed itself into a fortification.

Urist Austin, Axedwarf.  A dwarf barely alive.  Gentledwarves, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic dwarf. Urist Austin will be that dwarf. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

I once "stationed" (repeated lever pulling) a noble in front of a ballista (with a fortification again) and fired. He escaped with only a hand injury.
