I've had one goblin ambush in the history of my fort. . .since then I've killed one forgotten beast and lots of trogdolytes.  But since then there have been no sieges, ambushes or uninvited guests of any kind.  Should I be worried or am I just bored?

You're just bored, though I advise to ease this you imagine that there's a huge dragon going around eating all the goblins who are marching towards your fortress, and eventually the dragon will find its way to you.

If that were the case then I would fortunately not be flooded with migrants every season

well while we're discussing this fortress I'd like to ask if an artefact floodgate could withstand magma

Your migrant dwarves use an underground train network to get to you.

I'm going to assume that depends on what the floodgate is made out of.

Artifacts are completely indestructible, but if the mechanisms connecting the floodgate to the lever aren't magma-safe, the floodgate will deconstruct. Amusingly, artifacts made of flammable material can still catch fire, but will never be extinguished or destroyed.
