The Dwarven Magma Cannon
« on: April 09, 2009, 04:57:54 pm »

So. I've been playing with the idea of a pressurized magma cannon for a while now. The opportunity presented itself while I was trying out a method for using cast obsidian for aboveground construction.
Without further ado I give you: The Dwarven Magma Cannon.
Map:http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-5437-thedarkfortress
This is just after the first test firing.
Here's a pic of ground zero:

You may note that at the moment the cannons range is about five feet, but I say that the utter destructive power of the device makes up for it. Five feet is plenty when the blast radius is measured in tens of squares.
Unfortunately I couldn't get a video of the test firing. 40d11 is camera shy.

Comments and suggestions, please.

Heh, possibly.
You have no idea how many fires I've started in this fort :D

This redefines dwarven engineering... if you discover a way to extend the range you need to put a construction guide for it on the wiki.

I may have to try this some time, see if I can't build it over a pit for goblins and elves...

On the Wall is a Masterfully engraved carving of Urist McHardcastle and Goblins. Urist McHardcastle is surrounded by the Goblins. The Golbins are stamping on Urist McHardcastle. Urist McHardcaste is laughing at the Goblins. The carving related to the prolonged and bloody death of Urist McHardcastle in the Fall of 1659, the Winter of 1659, and the Spring of 1660. On the engraving is an image of Cheese.

The magma cannon will always have a short range. However, what you really need is an orbital magma cannon: pump the (massively pressurized) magma up to the top of the map, build a floor with hatches so you can fire the magma cannon at any spot on the map, laugh as magma rains from the skies on the heads of your puny enemies.

Rysith:
It might be possible to devise something to at least direct the fire better.
And I agree with the orbital fire idea. The system I currently use for magma transfer is directly applicable for that purpose. Some kind of a grid perhaps?

Salmeuk:
Perhaps this schematic will clarify things.

Maybe the community should get together to make some sort of "Prize for Dwarven Engineering" or something. We could have a small panel of judges, and we could award titles for people who come up with stuff like this.

I've just made an idea on how to effectively utilize this beta model for actually EFFECTIVE use, and exploits an engine bug...

Fantastic, do tell.
It is an addition to my ideal thoughts of a badass Keep.

Hint: One time I mentioned something about a Magma Tower Run, you climb a tower, not only is said tower is tall, the pit it is placed in is flooding with magma, but this is completely irrelevant to said project being quoth to paper.

Foa cancels lurk; has activated DFPaint and MSPaint
Foa has Exitted MSPaint; Basic Print created...

It is a hall, that floods with magma/water, and when it is out of use the grates in the middle drain it, and send it back into the reservoir.

Said grates can be removed so that said invaders are sent into the fiery/watery depths.

A hall and the large ass vat of magma, and the mechanisms need to flood it.

Hmmmm.. Orbital Magma + a similar setup for water a z-level higher...

New plan, encase at least one fort in a solid block of Obsidian a minimum of 25 z-levels tall, and 25 tiles on a side.

Bonus points, carve out all the rock surrounding the cube of doom leaving only a few flimsy connecting bridges.

Bonus Bonus points... build a second smaller cube with a long winding 3-dimensional maze invaders must follow carved into it.. then collapse it with them inside.

Triple Bonus.. add a self destruct to your own cube to do the same.
