What I was trying to get at is simply that subsistence farming isn't going to feed the couple billion people in Africa.

You guys ever read the book ConShelf 10?

It has an interesting idea in it:

Instead of farming the land, cultivate in the ocean!
Grow tons and tons of kelp underwater and herd fish... As you can have millions of them per kilometre.
