I have begun!
« on: April 12, 2009, 08:44:27 pm »

I have begun my megaproject, a giant tank of magma above the world made of limestone (I have too much of it), the question is, should I instead make MASSES of hatches to drop magma where ever in the world i want to? It's dwarfy enough alright, but is that possible? Anyway, I want to hear your thoughts on it. If I do use hatches I'll use bauxite hatches, and put them every 10 or so blocks.

Make it several levels so you get magma pressure, and make strategic chokepoints that you can drop magma on.

I'm planning on making it 16 Z-levels, and the hatches would be awesome to drop on anything that happens to pass by.

OOOO!

Why not build it so that each hatch pulls from its own little reservoir of magma. (fed from the main one)
Then hook the hatches up to pressure plates around your map.

That way it can be the most awesome of traps.

You see, booze is a parasite. It lives off dwarves and compels them to dig into the ground so as to create massive defences to protect it's self. It really shouldn't be called dwarf fortress, Booze fortress would make much more sense.

This has been mentioned before; its been dubbed the Dwarven Orbital Bombardment. The difficulties in this are keeping the magma from evaporating, keeping it from hardening (rain), and waiting for the damn pipe to refill.

Putting a roof on it should solve the first two problems, shouldn't it? The pipe refilling is going to be painful though.

Yeah, the difficulties are mostly annoyances.

I'll make a roof too! Also, this completely renders windmills and outdoor farms useless, and all the trees will kinda die...

Aha! The trees will still grow! :D
Turns out under constructions is only INSIDE, somehow it's still LIGHT under the constructions.
edit: I forgot to mention, I posted my map on DFMA, search for Submergedrings.

We must assume dwarves use non-Euclidean geometry that is unaffected by any force except gravity and still lets light through despite anything above and below it bar solid earth.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Wouldn't it be:

Pansy Elf: Our wooden arrows will blot out the sun!
Urist: Then we will make our own.

1. Build Giant Tank supported by a column.(52x52x32 including roof walls and floor.)

2. Fill tank via tower and bridge.

3. Link lever to the column...

4. deturmine ETA (Estimated Time of Armegeddon)

5. ETA = now

6. Pull the layer.

7. Watch your computer implode trying to calculate magma bomb displacing 525000 units of magma (50*50*30*7) instantly splash onto the world destroying everything in site.

8.  ???

9. Profit!
