ArgH! ! My computer is dying
« on: April 16, 2009, 10:02:32 pm »

I've tried following the instructions but it doesn't change anything.
Everytme I turn on my computer I get this message. The first time it happened (four years ago), I took my PC into a shop and they just vaacumed it out for $90 fixing the issue. I installed another fan and it didn't happened again until about a year ago, I vaccumed the motherboard myself which fixed the problem. This time vacuming the motherboard didn't work. My father has gone ape-shit at me blaming my games and LANs for the problem, he has some important stuff on the hard drive that he needs to access (which he didn't back up  ::) ). I'm on my mothers laptop at the moment and don't have access to any other computers to transfer the hard drive to. Is this a problem originating in the motherboard, RAM, hardrive or GPU? Luckily I'm upgrading the RAM, motherboard and GPU soon anyway but if it is a problem with the hard drive then I will be stuck.

The laptop I'm currently typing on had this problem often when running Windows, but Linux has never crashed with any overheating message. My research at the time led me to believe that it was a display driver issue, which is correlated by the fact that my display driver would periodically crash.

Tl;dr:
If you're getting a new GPU regardless, that may fix it.

There is probably nothing wrong with your hard drive. That particular stop error is usually caused by faulty memory or a driver error. Try running memtest on the computer and see if it finds any problems.

If the problems don't go away after you install the new hardware, try reinstalling the OS.

Might I suggest taking the next opportunity to makes some good backups?

Ah yeah, I got this some times too.
WTF is this anyway? Bad drivers?

Anyway, after I upgraded my GPU, this has not happening again.

This could also be the PSU, so before you upgrade anything, I'd try to rule that out.

weak PSUs can cause all kinds of errors, some of them look like overheating GPUs or dying RAM or harddrives that dont know where to write and so on and so forth.

Disconnecting the GPU might help. If it continues, at least you'll know it's not your graphics card fault.

no, not really.

For instance, if it is the psu, as I said it could be, the GPU would be the major power consuming thing, and removing it could dip the PSU right below the "alright, I can handle the reduced load" threshhold.

Also, very few mobos still have onboard video, so how are you going to test anything without GPU ;)

Looks like a PSU/RAM/Mobo or GPU problem. You should test all parts of your computer separately.

This time vacuming the motherboard didn't work.
Did you take some q-tips and cleaned the edges of the fan blades? that's exactly where the dust collects and does this little aerodynamic trick that makes fans completely useless.

Did you clean the PSU or at least vaccuum the air intake as good as you can?

Puck: if the problem continues after disconnecting the GPU, then he'll know it's not the GPU. One part less to worry about. If on the other hand it starts worknig again, then it might mean either GPU or PSU, as you've stated.
Also, are you serious about the mobos' lack of onboard graphics? there always should be either integrated mid-range GPU or just a basic VGA/SVGA adapter. At least I've never seen a mobo without one(though, I admit, I havent seen too many of them).

I thought all computers came with a shitty ass integrated GPU that uses the CPU. How else could my computer display an image when my GPU decided to fuck up and die? I had no integrated backup GPU at all. But it still gave me a picture in 256 colors and 640x400 resolution. The OS worked and I could diagnose the problem.

Well, I gave the computer another quick vacuum and it has started working again.  I found a huge clod of dust in the CPU heatsink and sucked it out. My friend also told me to reset my paging file so, I did that afterward, don't know if it had any effect.
The power supply is also making funny rattling noises (It is 9 years old so yeah...),
I'm not sure how long it will last but it seems to be doing alright for the time being.  I'll be upgrading soon, just need to wait for my pay check next Wednesday and I will be fine.

If you didnt plug your monitor into a different socket, like.... the one from the integrated graphics on the mobo, that doesnt say anything.

Seriously. Good motherboards, stuff you use for gaming rigs, rarely ever come with integrated graphic chips for over a decade now.

No. I actually did have to replug it. Turned out my GPU got fried.

Seriously. There's one unexplained VGA slot there. It haunts my dreams.
