You, Me, and the USMA
« on: April 19, 2009, 08:34:27 pm »

So, uh, hello strangers.  :-[

My parents have finally given up on subtly hinting that I should become a doctor, mainly because they realized that I was incompetent to the xtreme. Then the little 'hey high school student you should consider our college' letters started coming in, including a nice shiny pamphlet from West Point. It was this pamphlet that gave my parents the idea that I should probably do something vaguely military-related, preferably after graduating from West friggin Point. So I was happy for a few milliseconds because I had found a new and possibly better goal in life. Then I realized that military academies don't accept wimpy losers.

Problem 1. How to train myself to perform several feats of superhuman strength by collegetime.
Problem 2. How to stop sucking at my classes next year. I have already chosen several laughably difficult medicine-based classes and now I have to take them for the dreaded Important Eleventh Grade Of Extreme Importance.
Problem 3. How to stop sucking in general.
Problems 4+. How letting my life be governed by the whims of my parents is probably a bad idea, and indicative of a bunch of other problems too, probably. But it's not as though I had any better ideas.

Go for it.  Start writing your congress peoples and city leaders and such, you will need a sponsor.

First step,
Realize that calling yourself a loser isn't making anything better.  Stop saying you suck and start improving your situation instead.
Second step,
If you want to bulk up in highschool, join more sports teams.  Cross country, football, wrestling, swimming and lacrosse spring to my mind but I don't know what they've got in your neck of the woods.
Third step,
If you want to do better in classes, then get help from those good at classes.  Look into peer tutoring, asking your teachers for advice and extra work and forming study groups (with classmates who won't distract you.)

Daft, from the posts of yours that I've read, you seem too intelligent to join the military. Just go through a normal college. Major in something that interests you. Enjoy life.

Don't end up like me; a fifty year old nothing living on disability money in a tiny, filthy 1 room apartment, never having known what it feels like to make a difference. Just believe, Daft. Do it for me, and all the others out there.

Take some martial arts. That helps with points 1 and 3, might not help with 2. For 2, the only thing i can think off is to take massive, detailed, wall o text notes, especially with chemistry, biology, and history notes, where you have to memorize sheer blocks of stuff.

Join cross-country or other similar running sports, they're the most accepting and you may find you really enjoy it.

17, I believe was what you said last time :P

Also, the military are smarter than you give them credit for. Still, don't go for it.

Body building [nothing serious, just some "light" training, since you don't want to be a professional] combined with some serious martial arts [kempo, sambo, krav maga etc.]  = profit.  ;)

Even though I don't have any particulars, I'd imagine that learning a genuinely deadly martial art would be very expensive.

Not at all....but again what do we call "expensive"? Hungarian Kempo trainers are quite famous for example [..ever heard about Zen Bu Kan Kempo? It has been developed by a Hungarian. Official site: http://www.zenbukankempo.com/], and 3-4 "lessons" / week costs like 150$ on a monthly basis. That's quite cheap imo.

My personal advice would be don't join the army and find something else to do.
That's right, I'm a pacifist European liberal.

NO!!! JOIN THE ARMY!

What could possibly go wrong? The world's such a peaceful place, you'd probably be on vacation ALL THE TIME \o/

Isnt that the thing with the ongoing discussion whether its a big, elaborate scam or not?

How to not be a wimpy loser
« Reply #13 on: April 20, 2009, 03:37:45 pm »

If you're determined to join the military, I'd advise joining the track and/or wrestling teams.  Track will give you superhuman cardio and endurance (which you'll need for boot camp, and is just all-around awesome to have no matter what career you decide on), and wrestling will make you strong.  Wrestlers do a lot of exercises that I don't see any other sports doing, and those exercises will make a lot of difference in your confidence and self-image.  I wish to Armok that I'd done both of those when I was in high school.

Imagine getting to boot camp, only you can do more pushups than any of your drill instructors.  Nice mental image, isn't it?  It's probably not going to happen (since those guys do that for a living every day for years) but it's nice to think about.  If you go the West Point route, you'll have lots to worry about, and being strong with incredible cardio and endurance will mean that you have one less thing to worry about, since the physical fitness portion of the experience will be a snap for you.

Even if you don't end up going the military route (and I'd advise against it, you join the military because you KNOW it's what you want to do, not because you can't think of anything better), track and wrestling will make you NOT be a "wimpy loser".  Plus, wrestling is a legitimate martial art, and if you take it in high school, it's a martial art that you don't have to pay (much) to learn.  $150 a month?  How about $0 a month?

If you have smarts, then there's no reason you should be a grunt.  There's plenty of jobs in the military (esp. airforce) that don't involve running off with a gun and shooting things.  I'd look into that.
