Atheists
« on: April 26, 2009, 07:41:43 pm »

Hi,
I see so many topics concerning atheism or proving that no god exists or reasons to be atheist or whatever...
I just don't get it. When I was young I was teached about Jesus and God and I believe in a God until today. I have had a experience that I'd describe as meeting God (it was not a near-death experience) but even without it I wouldn't be able to understand how you think you're alone in the universe. Everything is so perfect, there's a reason for everything and there are so many "coincidences", how's that? How did everything start?
I understand religion has been transformed in a non-sense thing these days, with people making religions to earn money or to have fun.
In my opinion religion should be the way to find the truth about all those questions. In this point of view, an atheist would be religious too.
So, how do you atheists, explain all these above?

I want to bring a constructive discussion, please don't discriminate atheists or religious people, just say your reasons and why. Thanks ;]

I just find it annoying that Atheists think that their non-belief is some sort of religion, Next they will be having United Atheist Churches built and an Atheist pope or something. :P

What?! Last couple of religion threads we had a bunch of people saying that Athiesm was a religion, and a bunch of Athiests arguing against it.

Edit: How come this wasn't posted in http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=34515.75
which is just one topic down?

I consider myself an atheist, and find my stance perfectly sufficent for explaining the world around me.
Your "God experience" could be also explained on purely psychological terms, whatever it was.
I don't think I'm alone in the universe, there's at least one planet full of life to accompany me. And even if I felt alone on some higher level, I don't think that inventing a Big Brother sort of being would be the best way to alleviate any such "loneliness".
World seems perfect to you because you evolved to fit on this world.
A statement: "there's a reason for everything" is equally viable as the: "there's no reason for anything". There's no evidence to support any one of them, but one can always use the Occam's razor, which seems to favour the second one, as the world seems perfectly able to exist without any reason to it, at least in my opinion.
There's no real reason to believe in Occam's razor's infallability, of course.
How did everything start? Hell if I know. It could very well just start. Whatever you mean, life, the universe and stuff.

I like the religion's tendency to tell people to do good, athough ideally, a human should be able to do good without it.

My opinion:
"If you want a 'Big Brother', go read 1984."

Now no more religion threads.
And I want to be the atheist pope too.

Somehow I knew this thread was gonna take off.

I'd settle for a Popesicle.

Everything is so perfect

No it isn't, but to show you that I'll need some concrete examples of things you consider perfect.

The short answer, we don't know yet. However, we don't know ≠ God did it.

Ooh! let's turn this around...

Who here can give a reasoning with 'sound' proof that higher beings (Other than whales and birds) exist?
