Does anyone know why the error is called what it is called? I like to know these things :P

Because that's what the message would say. NEMSIS UNIT LOAD FAILED.

Yes, I know, but why would the message say that? What's a "nemesis unit"? Apparently, it refers to the files that disappear, but why are they called that?

I think it's because the files contain the data about the creatures in the world, who are all effectively the player's nemeses.

I am playing this in 2010, and I got the bug, but the save file I'm using has 96 files in it, all the ones that were there originally. My save is in a folder called "Cavebrands" - is that folder the only important one? Do my "current" and "region1" folders affect things? My region1 folder has hundreds of files, so that seems to be fine. It's a fortress called Libashmeng, but I don't play it. My "current" folder has only two art_image files, but I don't play that one... I only play Cavebrands.

One thing that may have affected it; I copied it from an unmodded-DF save to an Ironhand-graphics save. This involved replacing the original raw folder with an Ironhand raw folder.

Removing the diplomats can fix this? If so, how would I do that? Would it work when the elf diplomat is already on the map?
Or can that only be done starting an entirely new game =/

One reason for savefile corruption for me that is common seems to be running out of disk space. DF should check for available diskspace before writing, which it right now probably doesn't do and just fails silently with a corrupted save.

Playing this from last year but never got error of save-file corruption files. uploaded new data but still running well.

I've just had this happen to me in adventure mode, trying to resume playing as a hero I had retired in some settlement. I had abandoned a fort using the "stop items scattering" trick, so maybe that's tied in with this. So if I go back to the fort I abandoned with another adventurer and kill any diplomats I find, maybe it'll work?

I just had this bug using the latest version of dwarf fortress.

I read this thread and checked to see if there were files missing, but the save has hundreds of files along with the world.dat, so I don't really know what's wrong.

If I could get some help on how to fix this, I would be delighted, since this is an almost twenty year old fortress that I have been playing for the better part of a year, and losing it would really suck.

I'm using genesis mod, and I also did some modding of my own to make dragons breedable, which worked and never gave any trouble, and recently gave them wings and the flier tags. My error folder has no entries related to this issue, and I do have a copy of the entire region folder from maybe a month ago.

I really appreciate any help.


EDIT: I think I solved it. The date used by the bug to spring has passed with no event. After trying a lot of things and failing, I remembered I had given wings to a creature. I modded them away to their original state, and the bug didn't manifest. I wouldn't have thought that was the cause of this bug, but, I'm a happy overseer now.

It SHOULD not be a case of a bug since wings alone do nothing and you can add them just fine. That was some weird coincidence :D.

I suspect I have just been victimized by this in the latest version.  The error I get is "Missing Plant Gloss: [blank]", but my save folder is empty as described here (except for the raws folder). I have seasonal saves set, but my save folder doesn't have any explicit backup files, just "region x" and "current." Any ideas?

This stuff is very outdated, except for the whole "turn on your autosave" stuff.  Locking the thread to avoid confusion with previous versions, where this bug surely expressed itself in different ways for different reasons.

Edit:  Never mind, it won't let me lock it...

I just experienced this bug, and was able to recover without a backup save.

Version: df_34_05_win
Mods installed: none
Cause: used Windows Task Manager to kill DF immediately after an immigrant wave, before they all got on-screen (breached caverns right next to a forgotten beast, yes I'm a dirty cheater).
Fix: renamed ...\data\save\current

I have to admit, I was just about to panic over lots of lost effort. Hope this helps troubleshoot or aids others in the same predicament.

What exactly did you do to fix it? I'm not sure I understand.

i must necro this thread, this is the first time I recieved this error, the nemesis unit one.  I am playing in dwarf fortress mode, and there are no traders or anything.  i'm really not sure why it's happening.  i have plenty of files in my world's save folder, 5089 counting the "world" and "raw" folder.  can anyone provide a fix?  it was my best fort.

edit:  I renamed the folder in my dwarf fortress save folder "current" to "currently" then restarted dwarf fortress, recieved a new "current" folder, and deleted "currently" this worked for an hour before I got the nemises crash again.
