Microsoft office alternative.
« on: May 07, 2009, 11:31:34 pm »

With a Chemistry assignment due, I open up Microsoft word 2002 expecting it to work as normal but apparently I need to validate it. I no longer have the install CD seeing as I bought it 7 years ago and it has been lost to the depths of my room.

Now this write up is quite urgent and I need to have it finished by the end of the weekend. It is quite an important assessment and is worth part of my grade for this years work. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? Are there any free alternatives to Word and Excel (I will need to be doing some graphs), or am I stuck with buying a new Microsoft Office for $200. The other alternative is writing it by hand, but I don't know if my teacher would stand marking half a dozen pages of barely decipherable handwriting.

I second open office (dot org). It's great, and can open all the newest MS Office formats (which you can't even do in MS Office unless you buy the newest version). We use it as standard at work.

Open Office.

I don't use MS Office anymore. I actually pirated MS Office for home and used the original for work, but now I use Open Office for both! Thanks, Microsoft, for breaking your own monopoly with anti-piracy methods!

MS Office 2007 is still neater than Open (by default), but it's a lot less hassle to use, and has all the little things about MS which I use in the first place.

Got OpenOffice.org, seems to be working perfectly, seems almost identical to word. I'm amazed Microsoft have sued for copyright infringements.

Not to mention that software development is an endless cascade of stealing ideas.  (Toady excluded)

Open office is pretty good.  I haven't used it much, but I think Google Docs works well, too.  I tried to get a team of mine to work on a project using Google Docs, so we could distribute it and update it in real-time.  They acted like I was trying to overthrow the government.  Ah well.

Compatability for open office is pretty good too. Provided that you remember to save your stuff as .doc (you won't be able to open it when you take it to school to print if if you dont!)
