I just got my bike stolen...
« on: May 10, 2009, 01:36:34 am »

Yeah, brand new bicycle bought yesterday. Rode it once. Stolen from my garage. The guy broke into my garage, cut the chain, and stole the bike and ONLY the bike. $200 goes flying out the window.

Geez... I thought it was impossible for me to feel a sense of loss.

Any advice on how to better secure the inevitable new bike I will be getting?

Run some hidden cables from the bike to a car battery.

Might want to try adding a metal edging around the windows and attaching car batteries to them too.

Also, before anybody else says it, lava.

Do the same thing again, but watch your garage.  Obviously they had to see you put it in there, and must be right in the area.

And don't spend $200 on a bicycle.

Barbed wire around the windows, electrified, like duke said. Signs warning of non-existent attack dogs and a motion detecting alarm system, whether or not you have one.

And don't spend $200 on a bicycle.

This.

It won't deter thieves, but it will certain lessen them stealing it. Hell, I had a $2 bike stolen once.

I've got a bike with completely busted brakes in my back yard, laying on a fence completely exposed to the street. Other than that, an alright bike. Never stolen.

 East Coast awesomeness.

Never had my bike stolen either. I've never locked it up, just leave it lying under a corrugated iron bike shelter thing in my back yard. So it's probably about where you live. If it's that much of a problem you could move, padlock the shit out of your bike or get a dog.

Flat key D-locks are probably the safest and cheapest bet. Cable locks suck, period.

Cables work 99% for theft deterring. But once the guy actually cuts the chain... wtf?

I use a really strong industrial strength chain for mine though. You'd need a blowtorch to cut it, or a guy with a bodybuilder physique. Those strong chains are quite cheap too, ugly, but tough.

Sorry about your bike Umi. I had a friend that kept his bike in a room on the second floor of his house and it was STILL stolen by somebody.

Really determined thieves, they are.

I think stealing someone's bike is akin to stealing someone's pet. There's no such thing as a bike fence and at most, the thief will only get maybe $50 for his loot. Most of the time, they don't even use the bike themselves as most experienced bike thieves are well... experienced in the art. His gain from the effort involved in stealing is miniscule compared to the loss of the other party.

I'm going to get a cheap $50 bike probably on Monday with a U-lock. I won't keep it in the house though, since I know some thief is willing to break into a place just to steal a bike. Might put it under the front stairs and cover it with a tarp or something.
