Modern History Poster
« on: May 13, 2009, 06:40:40 pm »

For my modern history class I need to do an art project that is related to the time between 1910 and 1990. I decided that I wanted to just do a general poster that incorperates all the main symbols of what happened in this time. I haven't even managed to start this project yet and it MIGHT be due... tommorow. So I come here now asking from the bottom of my procrastinating heart, that you might help me think up some symbols to include.

Here is a list of things I have thought up:

Swastika (This is kinda a given, That century was changed drastically by what the Nazis did, and everything that happened ties into it.)

Feminism-Posters (Y'know those "Yes We Can" posters? Not the Obama ones? The Women with the handkerchiefs holding wrenches and such? That's another big part of the american history part.)

Random Ads (Things like car's and such)

Inventions (Stuff that was wrought by the 20th Century)

(Something to do with Gandhi, I dunno what, but something.)

Hiroshima+Nagasaki (Another kinda necessity, along with all of the Manhattan Project.)

Any and all help is appreciated, linking to examples is even better, but not necessary.

Thanks in advance!

A picture of Joe Mcarthy or a floodgate could work too.

Be sure to have a good mushroom cloud.

The cover of grapes of wrath?

Soviet and American flags?
The cover of the Miracle movie (we beat the sovs!)

A Model T
The wright flyer

A tank?

Oil Barrels?

Repeating rifle?
Iron Curtain!
Berlin wall!

I've always thought that this was a great document of the past 100 years or so from a science perspective. So I say do that, but with history. Like, "LET'S SAY YOU'VE GONE BACK IN TIME. Don't worry, we've got you covered. Here's what's just around the corner."

Oh yeah, also: ANYTHING that happened is fair game.

China, Russia, Germany, America, Norway, Austrailia, Cambodia, Valhalla, Spain.

And thanks for the quick reply, those are all great.

The Advent of the internet is another thing.

The first Polio Vaccine.

Vietnam and the Counter-Culture movement.

The assassination of JFK and RFK.

President Ronald Reagan has asked the new Congress to move quickly to rubber stamp his radical Arch-Conservative agenda. (The foundation of the modern conservative movement is extremely important point in the past century.)

How about a slideshow showing the evolution of guns? Titled "Progress! A hundred years of improvement in the tools we use to kill each other."

The slideshow would need armor too.

if you're dealing with symbols in the last century you should consider the marketing explosion, it was a century of logos, branding, and ad campaigns unlike anything ever experienced and has had a profound effect on people.  The repetition of symbols is staggering when you really consider it.  Read up a bit on Andy Warhol, and you may realize that despite the occasional sneer his art receives, he was really quite insightful.

Be sure to listen to the song "Andy Warhol is dead" for background.

It seems to me that those already existed before the time period he requested. Except for the case of Twitter, which is far more recent.
