Prone to wasting money.
« on: May 13, 2009, 07:42:54 pm »

I'm an avid reader of schlock mercenary, but haven't bought any books. I was considering buying a sketched edition of the newest book along with the other four books, but I missed the chance.

Now the writter is offering all five books in sketched editions. The problem is that it's an ebay auction and the price is already $320. I want the books, but it's a fair chunk of change for me.

Thoughts? I have 2 days and 21 hours left . . .

There are about a million better things to spend that much money on. I mean, buying those books of a comic that you like would be a good idea if they were like $30, but $320 is too much for any book.

Unless it's the Necronomicon, or something. I'd totally pay $320 for a Necronomicon.

I'm sure you can find much better ways to spend that money. Ways that will give you more enjoyment. Like buying a trenchcoat, or something like that.

I got my Necronomicon years ago at Waldenbooks for $7.95-ish. So far it doesn't seem all that evil. Maybe if it was in hardcover instead of paperback.

Is it the abridged or the unabridged version?

Yeah, it loses the some of the soul-devouring power without the hard binding.

Strife: $320 is way too damn much money for a sketched book, and I can tell you from experience that you're not missing much without.  I have the first two books, both with Sharpie doodles, and I would've gotten them anyway without the pics.  Of course, I got them for $30 each because I bought them from Tayler himself at a convention, but my point stands.

I think we all can relate to being wasteful with the almighty dollar.  I just try to be frugal whenever I can, opting for the secondhand softcover edition from amazon marketplace or some used book site.  My wasteful habits are xbox360 and ps2&3 games.  I'll buy video games that cost me $40 and $50 bucks and wind up only playing them once or twice.  I probably could trade quite a few in at gamestop or sell some of them on ebay, but my daily 9-5 grind leaves me too exhausted to even really mess with any big projects in my down town.

It's a dream of mine to one day own the complete OED.

Ahhhh... if only I had the shelf space. And 900 bucks to blow.

It's over $700 now.
Once it gets to the price of a handgun, it's out of my range.

It's already out of your range, then. It's been out of your range for a while.

A good pistol can be got for $250-$300, it started out of your range. Honestly, you have better things to spend that much money on.

A Borders by my house went out of business and was selling everything at 70% off. I went and snatched up two hardback Necromicons, and every single book set in the Drizzt Do'Urden world (Tale Worlds? It was about 6 books). Along with a huge specially-printed Watchmen, and a couple of books in the miscellanious section about forgework, armorsmithing, and swordsmithing. All for about $170.

My money vanishes into music and books.
I admit I bought some fairly expensive boots and a real oiled cloth trenchcoat, but those last forever.

The final price was 725. I'm thinking about using the money I saved to buy a decent great-coat for myself. One that isn't black. Stupid sterotypes.
