Note to self: don't create more large biome worlds unless you're prepared to deal with the consequences.

First try: oceans. I spawned in the water next to a tiny island containing a few weeds.

Second try: swamp. It's doable, but it's flat, boring, and the only animals I've seen so far are sheep and squid.

Large biome worlds work pretty well for me, I got a huge taiga on my first try.

There's just no pleasing some people.  I swear, when there's a patch in Minecraft all sorts of people come out of the woodwork and complain about every little detail. 

Just roll back to a previous version if you don't like it.  It's pretty simple to do.

actually, this is, AFAIK, the only time I've complained about an update, and I'd say this one is actually valid, given how I have to wait a minute at the beginning of a game before I can do anything, and occasionally have to save+quit then reload the map to fix chunk errors that used to be only present in SMP.

Never dig straight down. Stay away from lava; it doesn't matter how careful you are around it, you will eventually fall in. Keep anything glass far away from flat, horizontal surfaces. Creepers will screw it up.

Chances are big that you will be disappointed. If you want it DF'y you can always use TerraFirmaCraft.

Anyways, yeah. Iron is a crucial thing, save it for the tools!
Also dont just kill the animals! Grow wheat and breed them!
Make sure to be able to renew as many resources as possible!
Oh yeah, and the nether is the hardest place ever, and most boring, too.

Multiplayer anarhcy is the best kind of minecraft you can find, ruin lands for thousands of kilometers, scavenge and survive! 2b2t is known for its massive crater caused by griefers and spawners trying oto get out of the grief holes.

Follow the things the others said and when creating a world go into the world option and enable "bonus chest".
With the chest you will have an easier start. On top of what the others have said try to find/build shelter as soon as possible, at night everything wants you dead.
The best thing would be after you got shelter try to find some sheep, get 3 wool by killing them and build a bed. Otherwise if you are stuck inside without a bed, try making stairs downwards to build a mine while it is night. Oh another thing, if you see a tall skinny creature at night, don't look at it.
