Minecraft - It has blocks.
« on: May 17, 2009, 02:39:53 pm »

http://notch.tumblr.com/

It's a Java-based Infiniminer-like game.  So far you can dig around, create 4 types of blocks and just build stuff.
The block types don't do anything special, besides grass tending to spread onto sunny dirt blocks.  There's empty caves on the map, too.
I really like how smooth it runs for a Java applet, and that I don't need silly extra stuff to run it.
The future features, including multiplayer, also seem promising, such as survival mode where you have to eat and build, or fortress mode where two maps connect to each other to duke it out.

Just had a quick look and it does look interesting. Have to keep an eye on this and see how it develops.

Had a play around and made a quick construction.

Just tried digging down to reach the bottom of the world after having fallen off the edge earlier and fell into a cavern system that looks eerily similar to the screenshots toady posted up for the new underground cavern systems last month. Long winding passageways, larger caverns and changing heights.

I was JUST going to post this. I've been messing around a bit, and I'm probably going to recreate my fortress once you can save.

This is pretty damn awesome. Never could get infiniminer running, so this is very interesting to me. It seems to be avoiding some of the annoying bits of infiniminer, such as the bright, clashing red and blue blocks that seem to be standard for construction.

I'll be watching this closely.

It's a cool toy but are they adding anything else besides just changing the terrain? It's no fun building a totally awesome castle when you can't do anything with it.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

Well, the blog certainly promises more features to come, such as multiplayer and various game modes.
And there's a youtube vid showing the addition of water tiles.

What do the mobs do other than just prance around meaninglessly?

Once tried to conquer Earth, and succeeded! Too bad it got really, really boring, really, really fast.

One day, we shall all look back on this, and laugh. Sorry about the face, by the way, and the legs, and the eyes, and the arms. In fact, sorry 'bout the whole body.

It's more like a concept thingy than a game so far.  The mobs are just to show the physics and how it handles animations and models.
I really hope the developer can make something playable out of this. :)

UPDATE: Minecraft now has lava and water, and no more blue edge. Now the map is surrounded by indestructible blocks. You cant drown or be harmed yet but water slows you down, and lava makes you extremely slow. When they meet they form rock.

Its much better now, especially since you can gen a new map at will

Yay! Magma! The fluids are pretty infinite now, though, and move in strange burst.
Although the burst does feel like a slide-by-slide version of actual rushing water, I think I like it this way.

Sounds like its shaping up into somewhat of a survival game, which I like.

Can't wait until there's multiplayer.

Hey, I already used up my suggestion for breakable tiles, can someone suggest ladders for me?

Can't you suggest again after validating your first suggestion?  I suggested multiple tiles now.
