Virus and spyware protection.
« on: May 21, 2009, 01:55:35 pm »

The subscription from my old antivirus program has expired and I am looking for a new one. Something that is free and works.

I'm looking for advice on antivirus, spyware protection and anything else, recomended for protecting my computer.

Thanks in advance.

I thought AVG is going "Pay only" this month.

I use Avast.

For saying these words, us Avastians ought to strangle you.

Use Avast. It's completely free. It works awesomely. It uses very little resources. It has on-access protection and best of all, it has database updates every couple of days.

Don't. AVG support for it's free edition, is, well, crappy (Not that I use it, I only see it in the school, but yeah...) And it got false positives.

Avast, hmmm, good if you got UNLIMITED bandwith for your internet, with those updates. I heard it could not detect trojan that well, uh...

Avira, update slowly, good trojan database, and at least the same level of virus detection with Avast. However, Avira, well, updates REALLY slow...

(Not that I use any of them. I use Kaspersky...)

Ugh. AVG. I don't get why everybody raves about it. It's pretty much useless. Sorry if this seems a little harsh, but I worked in a computer repair store and the majority of computers that were infected with viruses or Trojans had either nothing or, you guessed it, AVG free. The other problem with AVG free is that it doesn't have a firewall. So if you are going to go for AVG, for gods sake!, at least get the free version of Zone Alarm.

I like Norton's myself as it does seem to catch most of the stuff out there, the system requirements for Norton's are getting lighter and lighter. One of the things I really like about it is that will detect when your computer is idle for a period of time and take the opportunity to run it's scans and updates. Gets rid of the annoying 'Please schedule when you want to scan?"  business.

Also remember no matter what one you go for to also have a dedicated spyware program as well.

The power of Avast! compels thee!

AVG is shite. You know it.

Seriously. Try it now. I dare you to compare it to AVG and call AVG superior.

Is that AVG? Because I'm pretty sure unprotected web browsing means using IE without any protection.

Both Avast and AVG suck. I tend to switch between them, depending on whether I have a virus the other hasn't detected :P
