Both Avast and AVG suck. I tend to switch between them, depending on whether I have a virus the other hasn't detected :P

Avast does not suck. Repent or be devoured by viruses.

I'm pretty sure there's been at least two times when Avast couldn't detect some viruses on my comp. So I switched to AVG, which got rid of them. But AVG couldn't get some of those viruses, so I switched back to Avast.

(Yes, I do keep the virus database updated)

AVG.
It's free, it works. I use it.

For saying these words, us Avastians ought to strangle you.

Use Avast. It's completely free. It works awesomely. It uses very little resources. It has on-access protection and best of all, it has database updates every couple of days.

Well it's not Kaspersky, but it's quite good, and it's free.
..as for spywares: Spyware terminator should be ok for you, since it's also free.

It's doesn't really matter which antivirus you choose, unless you somehow manage to find an utter piece of crap. Even those commercial ones sometimes can accidentally let a spyware through. Just give your machine a ComboFix treatment from time to time and watch what you install - to know which processes are valid.

Nothin new on the AVG Avast front I see. Both have their fans. I wish I got more informative responses. I can also stop being lazy and look around the net myself.

So far I'm interested in Avira.

Thanks for the tip on ComboFix. Good to know what to look for in time of trouble.

Avira never (I repeat _never_ & knock on wood) let me down.

Updates arent slow for me at all, either.

Only problem I had so far was ONE false positive, I uploaded the file to some online scanning service and for about 3 days approximately 30% of the listed scanners got a false positive.
