I'd suggest a Jack Russel Terrier. I love my little doggums. She does tend to be scared to death of cars though.

I have a purebred Shih-Tzu and a dog from the pound that was later "diagnosed" by the vet as a Shih-Tzu/Lhasa Apso mix. Nice thing about Shih-Tzus is that they don't shed everywhere. However, this tends to lead to mats in the fur on their ears and their tails. The purebred is cute, very nice to family, healthy, and stupid. The mix is cute, very nice to everyone, smart, and has numerous health problems. Both are inside dogs, but are fine outside. I'd say they'd cost around $15 each per week. They'd cost even less if I cut their fur myself. After each haircut, they take about 6 weeks for their fur to grow back out to this length. The mix only required minimal training. I groom their fur about once a week at most, usually. They don't really require much exercise. They're small bot not "toy"-sized like a chihuahua.

But [PRO-TIP]: Don't have the dog get used to using pads as their means of a restroom. The breeder did this with the purebred, so I just kept doing it. But then he started associating that with everything that was on the floor (including towels and beds). He poops and pees on almost anything now if I don't take him out in time.

A cousin of mine has Border Terriers. 3 of 'em. 2 males and 1 female. One of the males is smart like my adopted mix. The other is not too bright like my purebred. I haven't been around the female very much (she's only about a year old), but she seems to be the most aggressive of the bunch. She's also the smallest. Their coats are pretty wiry but short. The males are a bit bigger than my dogs, but not by much. Not sure about much else. =X

I'd suggest looking at websites that have information on many different breeds.

I've worked with dogs all my life, as far as smaller dogs go i would recommend a pug or papillon, both of these are smaller dogs with absolutely fantastic personalities, pugs are a bit more energetic than papillons.  If you're looking for a terrier i would recommend a rat terrier or rat terrier cross.  Rat terriers are a lot less exuberant than jack russel's for example, but still have that sharpness to their personality.  You might also like italian greyhouds, but i can't really speak to their personality in the home.

The biggest thing is make sure you don't get a dog that you don't have enough time for.  The more active breeds will make their own fun if you can't do it for them.  Which can be bad for your furniture/yard/what have you.

Again, I suggest a Border terrier. My family has one and it is a very good dog. A bit of an attention craver, but cute in a way. It always likes to be around one of us. An example is when someone goes to the toilet and closes the door on the dog. Haven't had to take to the vet for anything, Although a down side is their coat gets very oily and can stink. You will also need to pluck the fur during spring otherwise it will shed it's winter coat everywhere.

What about corgis?  Don't know much about them myself, but the way my brother talks about them, they sound like they meet the criteria.  Someone who knows more should come in and say something.

Also, be wary of dogs from puppy mills.  Those are prone to health problems from inbreeding.  I think it's sad that people do that, but there's little else you can do other than not adopt from a pet store.

Why not ferret?

They are clean, hyperactive, destructive, playful, cheery, can be walked, can be housetrained and they have cute whiskers.
They are the perfect combination of cat, rodent and dog characteristics!

except I hear the males can stink up the place if not neutered (like cats), but meh, bitches dribble blood all over your floor when they are in heat.

J/K ofcourse, ferret are not canine, you want dog. Should not be bothering you with ramblings. :)

Yeah, they're almost like real dogs, only with their legs half-chopped-off and new feet attached!

Really? I just consider them ugly and uncute.

I am pretty leniant when it comes to animals too. I find Cows cute but not those dogs.

I have a small bobcat as a pet and it's ok except it pees and poops everywhere. Exactly like a dog except deadlier.
