The bastards are ultra-mighty, so you can't put a strength requirement either.
Isn't realistic for them to pull it slower with that mechanic in place.
Still, the social skill stat gains will probably disappear in time.

Locks are what i'm seeing. Locks along with patrolled zones.
Like stockpiles and barrels, at least one guard is stationed per zone.

Heck, restricted areas could work as meeting areas for guards, and trespassers can be flagged as criminals by the closest guard. They'd get a job to escort a dwarf for a one-day sentence or something.
It'd probably suck to be a child of a guard mother.. ;)

Yeah, part of making this a little more realistic (is that a bad word yet?) would be doing away with the social tyrannosaurs that stalk our Fortresses.

Maybe kids should get their own set of skills? Along with a very sharp learning penalty on adult skills, and an even sharper stat penalty.

They could retain the skills they learned as children through adulthood, but those skills would rust like any other, if they didn't maintain them while they learned the things they needed to know as adults.

Naah, all we really need to to stop ALL stat gains from social skills. Right now it doesnt discriminate between skills even. Woodcutting statistically gives as much strength as being a comedian.

Besides, all stats are physical in nature. You could say that ANY mental stat is the social skills, which in turn boost the physicals :)
Well, i guess personalities also might count. But since they are currently static and of marginalized use, i don't think they measure up to be a statistic yet.

Getting rid of stat increases for social skills would also be a
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
good thing. But, then, kid skills might also be fun?

Oh i'm in luck! My legendary metalsmith DIDNT get a hammerstrike for missing an order for a metal we don't have! What fine luck, though the last dude to get a strike didn't even feel it because they're all hunters wearing plate and the hammerer is a lazy bum!
In the end, he only got a beating! Whaitamin- BWOOM! Legendary blinking dwarf brains litter the forge as legendary superhulk guard exits room after giving him a backhand in reprimandation.

I'm not saying kids shouldn't be worthless! But really, kids IRL suck too.
Before an age of say, 6, they should be babbling/drooling things intent on learning the culture, how to speak and walk on both legs. Then i say they should be able to be apprentices in some manner. Menial-like tasks. Weaving, cleaning fish, sewing, cleaning, picking berries etc.
Repetitive and low-investment things. Anything without quality modifiers.
Then when they're fully grown at 12, they can be sent out to haul rocks after they've suffered minor head trauma after attempting to get them into the military.
