... yeah, as near as I can tell, a ninja-styled game of that nature earlier than shadow tactics just doesn't seem to exist. Your earlier generation for that sort of thing is the desperados and commandos stuff, basically.

At the absolute least, if it's a thing, it probably didn't get localized into english, so... yeah. Good luck, heh.

Is there a "someone please make a game I dreamed about a decade ago" thread?

There was this one flash game I saw a while back. The player played as Death on horseback, using a scythe-lance thing - the plot of the game was something about how Death decided to fight life by fighting every single living thing ever or some such thing.

The game is an endless runner of sorts. You can move Death forwards and backwards, jump, and stab with Death's lance.

You could do things like kill birds that flew by, stab trees and make them instantly wither, etc. But if you get touched by those things you get destroyed.

There would occasionally be jousts with knights hoping to slay Death - you have to time your lance just right or you'll immediately, uh... die, I guess?

Also, jumping over the knight also "kills" you.

Later on as you purchased enough upgrades you'd get flying sections.

Again, it's a flash game, so I don't know where it is, and I can't recall the name. I think I might've seen it on armor games, but I can't find it there...

I might have asked about this years ago... but yet again I find myself thinking about it....

OK... late 1990s RPG. 3Rd person. Quite unique graphical style that combined I think a 3D environment with 2D sprites.
There was a central hub you unlocked towards the end of the game that kind of hung in an alternate dimension or something....

Thats about all I can really remember, except that there was also some kind of cool end battle.

Don't you remember what system it was for, and whether it was a JRPG or not?

PC. Not a JRPG.

Was it over-the-shoulder 3rd person, or what?

Nothing that famous.

So it's not Sacrifice then either, clearly.

I hope it's Sacrifice somehow, though that's more first person RTS than RPG.  Beautiful game.
Makes me wonder what happened to the first person RTS genre.  Maybe MOBAs fill that itch now.

Populous The Beginning was 3rd person with 2D sprites in a 3D background but is only a little bit RPG.

Sacrifice would have be a lot more first person if it wasn't third person.

Also, the Spellforce series was alive for entirely longer than it needed to be, and there's actually a brand new game in the same vein that has also failed to receive many positive reviews.

Neither of these sorry.

It was fairly solid budget, western style RPG. I -think- there were rune stones around the world of some kind which you could use to link up to the central hub...

Soulbringer?
Doesn't fit with the mixed 2D and 3D, but if I remember correctly you'd aquire a magical fortress/hideout halfway into the game that is accessed by runestones or something like that.
Also a fairly obscure but generally well liked game. (though the UI is horrible, but for a year 2000 game, that is kinda to be expected)

Yes!! Bless you kindly. I couldn't remember it to save my life.

Hmmm... 4 stars on GOG.
