"I wonder why that other dwarf is hacking at the fl
« on: November 09, 2007, 07:45:00 pm »

So after the third miner dwarf dying due to channels, I've decided to whine on the forums about it.

I build channels to form moats around my base, and to make lava channels to my smelters. Building these in a line would be the most efficient; however, since I have multiple miners, they tend to get in one another's way with lethal results.

Yes, this is something that needs to be fixed, but for the moment it's easy enough to avoid losing your retards.

I build a short section of channel and put a bridge over it. I dig an up-ramp on the side of the channel facing away from my fort so any miners that fall in can get out (the ramp could go on either side, but I put it on the far side in case something goes wrong and I end up using the channel for something else: I don't want invaders climbing out on the wrong side), then finish digging the moat. Only once the channel is finished do I connect it to a fluid source, which I do by designating a single channel tile so only one miner does the final job, which is safe.

The bigger problem is if you dig a more than 2-wide channel, different miners will get in each other's way in more than one way - they will claim a spot, another miner will pass it, continue digging, and if the first miner is slow enough, the claimed tile will be suspended mid-channel. I kinda hope dwarves will learn to separate tasks someday. Like, a miner says: "Me shall dig THIS channel", and no other diggers will claim a tile of his for work, and either choose something else to dig, or, as an option, claim a smaller area far from the first miner, and dig it.

Even a single miner can occasionally do stupid things, particularly if he's digging through grassy soil. However, I think it would ease some difficulties if dwarves simply treated any square with only one other square attached to it, as if it were impassable when they were digging channels. It would keep them from digging out the last square holding them up quite so much.

seperate all your channel designations by 1 space to stop this from happening.

code:
.....   X.X.X   _X_X_   _____   _____   _____
.....   .....   .....   X....   _X...   __X->
.....   X.X.X   _X_X_   _____   _____   _____
.....   .....   .....   X....   _X...   __X->
.....   X.X.X   _X_X_   _____   _____   _____

You just have to be sure to avoid cave-ins by doing the above method, because if a floor tile loses support on all of it's sides it will fall.
The most important part about the above is that you must designate tiles ONE BY ONE. If you do not, you will run into the problem of your miners undermining your other ones again.

code:
._.  _._
_X_  .X.
._.  _._

The left will collapse, while the right will not.
