Yeah... I work in the 'halp my computer dosen work' part of a CIT department.

MBAM removes all the malware/viruses/spyware/etc. on about 95% of the infected computers we see. Good program.  :)

It's not opening though.  >:(

However, I had to use a flashdrive to get it onto the laptop, and I'm not sure what its auto-updater would do without internet.

MBAM doesn't need to update itself before it runs.

At work, we have a couple laptop disc drive interfaces that can connect to a computer using USB. We just take out a laptop's drive, plug it in, and let the uninfected computer scan it. The computer is obviously set up to ignore autorun.ini files so any viruses on the laptop drive can't spread to the clean machine (heh).

Unfortunately, I have no idea where you would find one of these converter things...

Norton is worthless, by the way.

Also, a lot of these things get on your computer by putting up a pop up add asking you to download such and such anti virus thing. No matter what you click, it installs. It's really easy to block them, though, unless you're using IE.

Really, if you're using IE, get Firefox so you never have to deal with crap like this again.

Norton is worthless for spyware. For everything else it's good.

You repair-type nerds really have a racket going, don't you?

$80 to fix it, plus another $40 if they wanted it repaired.
Bloody hell.
The 'fix' has changed my username, given me a bad desktop, and killed my Sims 3 installation. I haven't tried my C&C stocks yet.

DF made it out okay. It's a good thing I keep it saved with my pictures!

I've now gotten firefox and I've learned my lesson.

Any desktop suggestions?

I assume you want something for your wallpaper?

(paraphrasing from some old site) "Now that you've installed firefox, go to my documents -> my pictures, and make a folder called 'wallpapers.' In that folder, make another folder called 'beach.' Now visit this site and stuff that folder FULL."

Bloody hell.
I got my laptop back, and it worked fine. For a while. I keep my laptop on most of the time, the first time I actually turned it off, it got fucked up again.

When I turn it on, it gives me a Dell Media Manager screen and says that it's configuring the files. Then it tells me that the hard drive is encrypted. Then it turns off the computer.

Safe moding it gives me an error.

I'll be taking it back to the shop today.
